Botox and Dermal Fillers may seem similar, but in reality, they are two very different products. Thanks to movies and television, it’s easy to see why the public gets confused. I always think of the movie Christmas with the Kranks, when Tim Allen’s character gets Botox to prepare for his trip and the food and liquid just drip from his mouth because his mouth is paralyzed, and he blames Botox for that.  Well, that is a HUGE exaggeration for comedic relief. I do crack up though. Every. Time. The truth is, for the lips and any area around the mouth we use Dermal Fillers, but the effects Tim Allen had in that movie actually resembles more accurately how one would respond after a trip to the dentist.

All kidding aside, there is a real difference between the two and, if you’re thinking about getting injectables, it can be quite confusing. Lucky for you, we’re here to help. In fact, we receive phone calls on a daily basis asking about the difference Botox and Dermal Fillers and want to know what they need. It’s common to have clients ask to get Filler for crow’s feet or Botox for lips. So, to satisfy inquiring minds, we felt it important to give you the lowdown on these two of our most popular services. Consider it Botox & Fillers 101.

Dr. Sanchez and his team of experts specialize in offering Allergan’s family of Dermal Fillers. There are five dermal fillers available in the Allergan family, each with a distinct formulation for different areas of the face, as well as how much is needed to achieve your best transformation.

JUVÉDERM® is the #1 dermal filler collection in the world that offers 5 different products to meet your specific needs. Add volume to plump lips, smooth lines, or lift & contour cheeks—we have what you need to get the results you want.

We naturally lose hyaluronic acid (HA) as we age overtime, which leaves the skin less supported, which causes lines and wrinkles to develop. By using Dermal Filler, we can help replace the lost Hyaluronic Acid, lifting and smoothing targeted folds and wrinkles, restoring subtle volume to cheeks, plump and smooth lines of the lips, smooth out smile lines and even brighten up dark, tired under eyes. These minor adjustments can make a huge, yet natural-looking difference to a person’s appearance, providing  them with a fresher, head-turning look. Each filler type can be used alone or in combination with others to achieve your desired results and in the coming weeks we will talk about each of them more in depth.

Natural and subtle results, leaving your friends and family wonder why you always look rested and youthful. If implemented properly, treatment can last between 9-18 months, but naturally towards the end, the effects of the Injected Hyaluronic Acid begin to break down, gradually softening. When the effects begin to soften, it’s time re-treat.

BOTOX® Cosmetic by Allergan is the ONLY FDA-Approved product to temporarily reduce the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults – helping them look better. Think of it this way, like with any muscle, if you stop using it, it weakens and shrinks. Botox does just this, temporarily stopping the muscles built up overtime from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows which cause skin to furrow and fold resulting in facial lines from moving. And regular treatment keeps these muscles from rebuilding, resulting in less Botox needed at subsequent visits and smoother lines over time. Botox is predictable and delivers consistent subtle results, allowing you to look like you, just with fewer developed facial lines.

It is the result of decades of research and extensive use in medicine that makes Botox the safest, most predictable neuromodulator on the market for use in BOTH the medical and cosmetic field.

Botox can be used to treat almost anyone. If your main concern are facial wrinkles and expression lines, then you definitely want to consider treating them with Botox before they become too deep and static, meaning the wrinkles are visible even in a resting state. If you wait too long and the wrinkles become static, you will most likely need use a combination of Botox and Dermal Fillers to stop further movement and restore the lost collagen in those areas.

Remember, Botox is used to soften the lines caused by facial expressions and typically lasts about 3-4 months, depending on dosage, area treated, and how quickly a person metabolizes the product. While Dermal Filler is used to Smooth, Plump, and Restore/Provide Volume, lasting from 9-18 months, depending on the treatment area, habits such as smoking, and (like Botox) how quickly a person naturally metabolizes the product.

When considering services like these it is imperative that you seek a trained and certified injector. Over the last 17 years of serving Rio Grande Valley residents, we are astonished at some of the storied our clients shared with us regarding the practices going on at other places. Did you know that it is illegal for a location to advertise that they are using Botox (for brand association) when they actually only use other brands. It is a crime and Allergan seeks and prosecutes these places as they are not certified or trained in the use of Botox. It is a classic form of “bait and switch” and quite rampant in the Valley by places who care more about their profit margins that their integrity. Great care is taken to protect the reputation of Botox. At Beautique, you can ask at anytime to see the box of the product we are using, where you will see the black label and hologram indicating that it is a legal product and is in fact Botox Cosmetic. So, regardless of where you go for your Botox or Filler, ask your provider to show you the vials before you get injected.

The Botox Cosmetic website has this to say about unlawfully claiming that a place provides Botox when they actually use another product:

“BOTOX® Cosmetic is a biologic product that cannot be interchanged – or substituted – for another product. In fact, the FDA has stated BOTOX® Cosmetic is “non-interchangeable,” which means that its safety and effectiveness cannot be claimed by any other product. The potency – or strength – of BOTOX® Cosmetic is measured in scientifically defined units, and the FDA has concluded that a unit of BOTOX® Cosmetic does not equal a unit of any other product. People who are prescribed a biologic product have a right to know exactly what they are receiving. Be sure to ask which product you are being prescribed.”
