Do I Need Microdermabrasion?

We’ve all heard of it before, but do you know exactly what microdermabrasion is and if you really “need” it? Microdermabrasion, as we know it, has been around since the mid-nineties, but if you want to get technical, you could say it’s been in practice since 1500BC if we count the Ancient Egyptian’s exfoliation method. They used something resembling sandpaper (OUCH!); so in terms of clinical treatments, microdermabrasion (facial exfoliation) is old technology. However, its promises of soft, glowing skin, diminished acne scarring, minimized pores, reduced fine line, and reversed brown spots have kept us addicted to this type of exfoliation, even after all these years.

If your skin is starting to appear dull, lifeless, or even older than you’d like? That’s because it takes about 25-30 days for your skin cells to shed. Unless you practice regular exfoliation, you may start to notice that your skin starts to feel uneven in texture, and not as vibrant as it could be. This is why we love microdermabrasion because it provides an instant boost to our skin by sloughing off the dead skin cells that are just lying at the surface (epidermal layer) of your skin. This is true for face and body. Exfoliating, particularly with microdermabrasion, reveals new and healthier skin safely without serious side effects. The only side effects that could potentially occur are operational. If your therapist is not highly experienced working with the handpieces they can cause a little bit of temporary scratches, if they aren’t precise, you may not have evenly exfoliated skin, and if you have a lot of active acne breakouts and the therapist goes over them with the handpiece, they run the risk of spreading the bacteria to other parts of the face and could potentially contaminate other clients IF they don’t know what they’re doing. Lucky for you, our therapists are experts when it comes to Microdermabrasion. In fact, we offer two types of microdermabrasion both of which can be used on the whole body.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic treatment that involves physically exfoliating your skin to improve tone and texture. During the facial treatment, your therapist will thoroughly cleanse and analyze your skin. If you’re a candidate she may prep your skin with a little glycolic or lactic acid to help loosen the dead skin cells even more. After those initial steps it is time for microdermabrasion. There are two types of microdermabrasion, crystal and crystal-free. The original method uses tiny crystals to help remove the superficial layer of dead skin cells. The handpiece buffs and polishes the skin by using a stream of fine crystals to exfoliate the skin while the vacuum loosens dead skin cells from the face.

The other most common method such as the Diamond Glow uses a diamond tip to exfoliate the skin, the vacuum clears up the pores freeing them from dirt and debris that accumulates in pores over time, and simultaneously infuses the skin with skin specific serums packed with antioxidants providing brighter, younger, more glowing looking skin.

How Do I Know if Microdermabrasion Is Right for Me?

As mentioned, Microdermabrasion is a procedure that removes the upper layers of skin known as the stratum corneum. The really cool thing is that this physical exfoliation promotes new collagen production, smooths out the skin and helps reverse the signs of aging by minimizing scars and smoothing out fine lines. The crystals, or serums, are gently worked into your skin by a handheld device. You can remove dead skin from your face, neck, and back without damaging the fresh, healthy skin below.

EVERYONE can benefit from regular microdermabrasion treatments, unless of course you have dermatitis, Rosacea or active acne lesions. Like we talked about earlier, most issues that can occur with microdermabrasion are caused by the therapist and lack of proper consulting. What’s the Difference Between Dermabrasion & Microdermabrasion?
  • Derm = skin
  • Abrasion = scraping or wearing away
  • Micro = very small

In short, both are facial treatments that improve skin’s tone and texture by scraping away a layer (or multiple layers) of skin—with microdermabrasion being a less invasive treatment. Dermabrasion is a medical procedure used to smooth out the skin by reducing the appearance of scars, fine wrinkles and even pre-cancerous growth. It’s considered a form of cosmetic surgery and can only be performed by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist. Ideally, the skin is numbed with general anesthesia, and during the procedure the doctor scrapes away at the skin, removing layer by layer until reaching the safest level that will make the scar or wrinkle less visible. After the procedure, you should see dramatic improvements in your skin’s texture and tone; however, the complete regeneration and re-pigmentation of skin can take up to six or twelve months.

While there are specific situations where the more invasive dermabrasion is necessary, we love microdermabrasion because it is painless and can take an hour or less. After just your first microdermabrasion treatment, you can expect to see brighter, more vibrant skin. It can improve your skin’s texture, tone, treat discoloration, sun damage, light scarring and even stretch marks. Unlike dermabrasion, you won’t need to be under anesthesia and should only feel a sensation similar to a mild scratching or vibration. The best part- no downtime or recovery following any treatment.

How Does Microdermabrasion Feel?

When you get your microdermabrasion, you will most like feel like you’re getting mild scratching on the skin, or like an intense facial scrub. The treatment is comfortable with a satisfying sensation of feeling your pores vacuumed clean, buffed and polished leaving your skin feeling squeaky clean, and positively glowing.
As with any treatment, microdermabrasion works best when you commit to a series of treatments (we recommend them monthly) so that you can see and feel the change you’re looking for in your skin. A series of these treatments will improve your skin’s cell turnover, revealing brighter-looking skin and a smoother surface.
Of course, if you have pigmentation, scarring or other skin conditions, more treatments could be necessary, but microdermabrasion encourages the skin cycle of exfoliating dead skin cells and stimulating collagen to allow new skin to grow.

6 Weeks To A New You!

Congratulations! We’re a full 14 days into 2020, and you most likely fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Made Resolutions and have already broke them
  2. Refuse to Make Resolutions at all
  3. Made them and are Keeping them like a #BossBabe

If you belong to group number 3 kudos to you for sticking it out this long and here’s to sticking it out for the long-haul. We’re cheering you on!

According to Inc.com here were of the Top 10 Resolutions in 2019. These results were gathered from surveying a group of 2,000 people:

  1. Diet or eat healthier (71 percent)
  2. Exercise more (65 percent)
  3. Lose weight (54 percent)
  4. Save more and spend less (32 percent)
  5. Learn a new skill or hobby (26 percent)
  6. Quit smoking (21 percent)
  7. Read more (17 percent)
  8. Find another job (16 percent)
  9. Drink less alcohol (15 percent)
  10. Spend more time with family and friends (13 percent)

No need to raise your hand, but if you are the type of person that makes resolutions (even if only in your head) which of these 10 made your cut? Now please know, we are not trying to sound discouraging in any way, but it’s a known fact that most people jump in head first when trying to make a drastic change in their life to only feel pressure, insecurities and defeat within the first few weeks of their new journey. Sadly, over 80% of people drop their resolutions two weeks into the year.  But remember, we are NOT Negative Nelly’s. We’re here to help…we are your personal cheerleaders.

The reality is: IT’S MIND OVER MATTER. As cliché as it sounds, there’s more psychological preparation needed to really give yourself time to be a better you. The Beauty Revolution of the Roaring 20’s

One Hundred Years of Anti-Aging…a Look at the Extreme Lengths at What our Great Grandmother’s Went Through to Achieve a Younger Look, and Why You Can Thank Your Lucky Stars that We’ve Come a Long Way!

Congratulations! We’ve arrived to 2020, a new year; a BRAND-NEW DECADE! Through the decades anti-aging trends have come and gone, but our obsession with finding the Fountain of Youth has not changed. Sure, the delivery systems have gotten better for the most part, but women of today share the same desires with their sisters of yesteryear.  Let’s take a trip down memory lane to see how the quest for beautiful flawless skin has…and has not changed much over the last hundred years. I’m especially partial to this topic because you see, my great grandmother was pretty daring for her time. Not quite a flapper, she did “rebel” by being the first girl in her church to bob her hair…. the scandal!  Remember, this was 1920s Cuba…that just wasn’t done in those days.

Flappers…say the word and you immediately picture Mary from Downton Abbey in her  fringe dress and slicked bob and while the bob is probably the most iconic image of the 1920s, there are many beauty trends from the 1920s that thankfully are no longer in existence, but like I mentioned before, the quest for looking young and free still dominates the health and wellness industry today. During the “roaring 20’s” the beauty industry took off. Hems got shorter, women started to wear makeup, particularly favoring heavy kohl lined eyes and bright red lips.  In New York, Elizabeth Arden opened her signature salon and began offering “make-overs” to her clients. On the west coast, Max Factor created the first foundation for film stars, and Greta Garbo ushered in the era of sophisticated eyebrows and the need for eyebrow pencils and mascara was born.

But just because a beauty trend is popular doesn’t mean it’s safe. Throughout history, people have ingested harmful substances and undergone dangerous, painful procedures in the hopes of attaining perfection. A 100 years later men and women of today still share crazy schemes in the name of beauty like suctioning lips with a shot glass to get plump lips; there’s still a lot risk regarding what women (and men) will do in the name of beauty. Thankfully a lot of the harmful regimens eventually made it out of style or were outlawed due to the dangerous substances people were ingesting and applying to their bodies.

We are going to learn about four crazy Treatments and Services that were popular in the 1920s all in the name of achieving beauty and beating the aging game.

 

X-Ray Beauty Treatments:

Known in the 1920’s as today’s version of laser hair removal. Back in the day, when x-rays were initially invented, beauticians would use x-ray as a tool to burn off hair! It became a popular hair removing technique until doctors began to notice that their patients were coming back severely sick. Thank goodness Theodore Harold invented the first ever laser in 1960 forty years later! However, it wasn’t until the late 1990’s that laser hair removal became FDA approved for commercial use.

Since then Laser Hair Reduction has become one of the most effective ways to remove unwanted hair from your body completely! Thank goodness! At Beautique Medical Spa each one of our team members has gotten Laser Hair Reduction, in fact, that is one of the first three services we offered. The other two were Botox and Dermal Fillers. Today, advancements in technology have made laser hair removal more affordable and accessible than ever—and it’s not just women. We have many men who are also seeking laser hair removal treatments, especially for larger areas like the back, chest, and shoulders. Another popular area for men is the ears! As improved lasers make the treatment available to people with various skin tones and hair types, living with unwanted hair is becoming a thing of the past…. like the 1920s.

 

Radiation-Based Beauty Products:

In the 20th century radiation-based beauty products were extremely popular and a “must have” for any woman trying to turn back the hands of time. Radium was more than a medical cure-all, during its craze, Radium was considered the “cure for the living dead” and also referred to as “perpetual sunshine” because of the glowing effect it causes. In the 1920s the added radium to anything somehow made it better. Medically, radium was usually injected or taken in pills. It was used to treat a wide range of ailments including hair loss, impotence, and even high blood pressure to name a few. In 1920 it soon became the rage and was added into a lot of household products, including a few cosmetic lines. At the time, a number of companies put radioactive materials into cosmetics. Of course, women who used these radium products (which were in almost everything from toothpaste to face lotion) saw a slew of terrible health complications years later.

As we have emerged into a whole new century and many decades later cosmetic lines and skincare lines have taken on a cleaner approach eliminating harsh chemicals that can cause damage to your health. Heavy Eyeliner Made a Statement

You might think that eyeliner was always part of a classic beauty routine, but until the 1920s, the average American woman had never even heard of it. Thanks to the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt, eyeliner’s popularity didn’t really skyrocket until the year 1922. This event introduced the western world to Egyptian eyeliner styles, which quickly caught on in the United States. The 1920’s were a time of experimentation for women, and they applied their eyeliner with a sense of drama which is why heavy black eyeliner styles were huge at the time. Maybelline, Revlon and Max Factor had picked up on the trend quickly creating their own kohl eyeshadows that women would use as eyeliner. However, DIY was always a thing and some women would use petroleum jelly and soot to create their heavy eyeliner look as well.

As the eyeliner has reinvented itself throughout the decades from thin black eyeliner, to blue smudgy thanks to the age of YouTube tutorials and Instagram makeup, the signature eyeliner style of our current decade has to be a graphic, precise cat eye. Liquid or gel eyeliner is usually used to execute this look. Our personal favorite is Jane Iredale’s Liquid Eyeliner. It’s highly pigmented, latex-free and even essential oils to help nourish your lash line. But if you want to boast the original smoky eye, Iredale’s black eye pencil goes on so smoothly and softly that it will not tug at your eyes which is naturally such a sensitive area.

 

Washing Away Fat with Soap:

Okay, this fad was probably one of my favorites.  I couldn’t start laughing, and wishing it was true. During this time women decided it was time to liberate themselves from the awful and oftentimes dangerous corset. As dress styles changed women became obsessed with their weight in the 1920’s, we relate today because much hasn’t changed, and a ton of wacky beauty products made their way into the mainstream. From medicated undergarments, fat reducing creams, slim figure baths to the ever popular “fat soap”. There were different brands of body washes taking over pharmacy shelves that promised to literally “wash away” your fat like dirt! The La Parle Obesity Soap was a coconut-oil soap tinged with potassium iodide and sassafras that claimed to melt away fat while shrinking skin so that there would be no excess skin after the weight was lost.

Of course, most products have been reinvented. We can still find cellulite reducing creams, waist trainers to increase sweating and cinching our midsection as we work out and the occasional body wraps to help reduce fat. Are they effective? Possibly, but the question is: are they permanent and that is a hard “no.”

While technology has advanced and we have seen a lot of services on the market promising to freeze and destroy fat such as CoolSculpting and Venus Freeze, many of them have come and gone.  We are a little more cautious before jumping on any trend bandwagon. One of the best services we have found to permanently eliminate fat is the UltraSlim. UltraSlim is the only non-invasive procedure for permanent, immediate fat loss without dieting, exercise, drugs, or surgery. Self Love Your Way Into 2020

As we wrap up 2019 it’s important to sit back and reflect on some of the growth you’ve had this year. How did your life change? Did you accomplish any goals? Did you see any movement or growth? Sometimes, we can get so caught up in the situations around us that we forget to see how much change a whole year has brought us. Now, not only are we about to enter a WHOLE NEW YEAR, but a brand new decade as well! If you’ve been looking for the Ultimate Clean Slate year, this coming year is gonna be it!

We all know that with a new year comes new goals and aspirations, but how about making yourself the goal for this year. Make yourself a priority and give yourself the self love you deserve. For you, by you. Despite what you may think, it’s not selfish to take out quality time for yourself and step away from your family or loved ones a few times a week. It’s actually recommended for a healthy body, mind, and soul. Self-love can often be misconstrued as self-indulgence—which is essentially treating yourself to things you don’t need—but that’s not the case at all. Selflove is showing respect for ourselves and our well-being. Selflove is taking responsibility for our happiness. Self-love is a great way for you to attend to your own needs in order to be better at attending someone else’s need. When we feel burnt out and depleted, it’s usually because we’ve been denied the time or ability to do things that have deep meaning to us, leaving us to feel “off balance”. How to Practice Self-Love:

Loving yourself must become routine, not a chore. Just like putting on your clothes, it should become an everyday occurrence. Self-care is more than just finding a proper work-home-family balance, it’s about finding activities that bring you joy and relaxation. To help get started on the right path, consider how you will integrate these activities into your way of life. It’s not enough to merely have the aspiration of doing something for yourself; you must commit and set aside time EVERYDAY for yourself. Put it on the Calendar, set a daily alarm or reminder to ensure you break away, if only for a moment to make yourself a priority.

While there are many things that can bring you joy, sometimes it helps to break things up in categories such as: non-negotiables and luxury. Ask yourself what you need for the day and be true to your feelings. Non-negotiables could be activities like the gym, running, yoga, journaling or meditation to help reduce stress in your life. Luxuries make you feel and look like a million bucks! These would include: a new outfit, a pair of shoes, monthly facial, massage, a fun haircut  and even a new lipstick. It’s not something you need to do every day, but when you do take out the time to do it, you feel amazing.

How to Practice Self-Love Daily:

Almost anything you do can be made into a “self-love” habit with the right mindset. It’s all about bringing attention back to yourself.

  • Skin care, for example, can be a wonderful way to practice self-care. It’s an act of wellness that benefits your skin’s health, but it can also be made into quality “me-time”. Something as simple as massaging a serum into your skin can help relax both your mind and body.
  • One of the most important acts of self-love that many people overlook is sleep. It’s one of the simplest and life altering gifts of self care that you can give yourself. Quality (versus quantity) sleep on a regular basis has the power to radically change your life. You’ll notice your energy levels are higher and your mood more balanced.

Exhale and suspend your breath for the count of four. Repeat this breathing rhythm for a few minutes, focusing on each breath to help prevent your inner thoughts from taking over. Practicing mini-meditations throughout the day can help to clear your mind and find a greater sense of inner peace.

How And Why To Exfoliate In Winter

Dear Santa, I’ve been very good. All I want for Christmas is beautiful glowing skin. If only it were that simple huh?  Unfortunately, we can’t get beautiful skin from Santa, we can learn how to get beautiful skin thru exfoliation. And who better to help guide us than skin experts. One of the key secrets to gorgeous flawless skin is exfoliation, which is why there are many different ways to safely exfoliate your skin to help you achieve your own HOLIDAY GLOW this year.

What is Exfoliation?

Exfoliation is basically the action of stimulating new cell growth by removing the cells your body no longer sheds. There are basically two types of exfoliation: chemical and physical (also called mechanical) exfoliation. Physical exfoliation like face scrubs (remember St Ives?) and facial brushes, remove dead skin cells by causing friction and sloughing them off.  While Chemical exfoliation most commonly uses acids such as salicylic to remove dead skin cells by dissolving the “glue” that keeps them bound to other cells. That “glue” is what causes dull, thick skin we all hate.

MANUAL EXFOLIATION:

A manual exfoliant is any product that requires a rubbing or scrubbing action, hence the term manual exfoliation. This could be a liquid, gel, or scrub with granules like microbeads or sugar to smooth and refine the skin that you apply with your hands onto your face in a circular motion. Using a facial brush enhances your exfoliation process and is very gentle to use on a daily basis. Physical (or manual) exfoliation is best achieved when partnered with your skin expert. In the treatment room while getting a facial treatment, your therapist will use some sort of safe scrub or gommage to help slough away rough dead skin. What’s important is that as an expert, your esthetician will know exactly which exfoliation product is safe and effective for your skin, will know what areas must be avoided if necessary, and is constantly checking your skins response to various pressure and ingredients being used. The use of steam also helps to open the pores which allows a deeper clean and exfoliation. If you want to continue this great skin, then you would definitely want to continue to exfoliate at home using your customized protocol.

CHEMICAL EXFOLIATION:

Chemical exfoliants are much easier on the skin than a lot of physical scrubs. There are two types of chemical exfoliants: AHA, or alpha-hydroxy acids, and BHA, beta-hydroxy acids. These chemical exfoliators, (AHA’s, BHAs, or enzymes) are used to loosen the glue-like substance that holds dead skin cells together, so they are easily removed. The two most popular AHAs are glycolic and lactic acids. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin.

Chemical Exfoliation is also provided in the treatment room and is sometimes considered the second exfoliation treatment via the use of acids in the service treatment. Acids range in strength. The molecule size of the acids is what influences your therapist to decide what type of acid is best to use for your particular need. From Glycolic to Salicylic, Jessners to TCA and everything in between, you definitely want a professional using chemicals on your skin. Those are the most basic forms of exfoliation, but we aren’t basic. We have learned that every month, your skin renews itself. Dead skin cells naturally detach from the surface of the epidermis giving way to new cells formation deep within the dermis. If these dead cells do not detach, they can accumulate on the surface and contribute to the appearance of a dull, rough, lackluster complexion.

Exfoliation is one of the best ways to improve your skin’s texture and tone, and it’s something all of us can do right at home. However, it’s also really easy to overdo it by exfoliating too often or using the wrong method for your skin type.

WHY YOU SHOULD EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN:

Your skin is constantly repairing and replacing itself and because of this, you can be left with layers upon layers of dead skin all over your face (and body). Exfoliating helps rid your body of these leftover dead skin cells, revealing healthier, brighter skin immediately after.

While brighter skin is certainly a perk, exfoliation can actually help improve the health of your skin as well. If your skin is full of dead cells, your skin care products may not be able to penetrate deep into the skin and do their work, and your make up can also sit on top of the skin making it look dry and dull on the skin.  By removing the top-most layer of skin, you’re making it easier for your topical skin treatments to sink deep below the surface where they could make a difference.

If you have acne-prone skin, exfoliation can help clear out clogged pores that often lead to breakouts. It can also help fade acne scars faster by accelerating skin cell turnover and stimulating collagen production. Just keep in mind that if you are acne prone, you especially must work with a skin specialist or you can aggravate your acne making the situation worse.

 

How to Exfoliate Your Skin Using Some of our Favorite Skin Exfoliators:

PHSYICAL/MANUAL EXFOLIATION: When using a physical exfoliant, start by washing your face with your regular cleanser- we personally love Rhonda Allisons Citrus Gel cleanser. Then, take a quarter-size amount of your scrub exfoliator (we recommend Rhonda Allison Brightening Scrub or DNA Phyto-Lipid Hydrating Scrub)

and apply it onto your face in circular motions, avoiding the eye area. Gently massage the product onto the skin, usually from 30 seconds to a full minute. Then, rinse off with warm water and gently pat your skin with a clean towel. Follow with your favorite hydrating mask, serum and/or moisturizing cream.

CHEMICAL EXFOLIATION (at home): Apply the gel or serum all over your entire face, neck, décolleté and you can even place on the tops of your hands. Allow a few minutes for the chemicals to be absorbed into the skin before moving on to the next step in your regimen, again we recommend finishing with a hydrating serum and moisturizing cream.

CHEMICAL EXFOLIATION (in spa): after a thorough skin analysis we will recommend either a microdermabrasion, Dermaplane, silk peel, or Fraxel to make sure that we give you the best treatment to help shed dull lack-luster skin.

Many skin concerns can be improved through the proper treatment of exfoliation such as: wrinkles, pigmentation, dry skin, dull and irregular complexion, pores, blackheads and acne. To improve the oxygenation of your skin, perform a superficial mechanical exfoliation at least 2 to 3 times a week.

It’s finally that time of the year again… lavish parties, gift exchanges, kid recitals, Christmas….the list can go on and on. While all the holiday festivities can raise dopamine and serotonin, the chemicals that make you happy, too much can stress can have the opposite effect, which not only impacts your mood, but can also wreak havoc on your skin. This holiday season, be good to yourself – mind, body, and soul. To help you maintain a healthy balance this holiday season, we put together 3 top stressors that can affect your complexion and how to combat them for glowing skin all month long.

 

 1. Lack of sleep deprives your body the chance to repair itself.

It’s no secret that the Holiday Season is a stressful time of year.  Trying to juggle everything from gift shopping, decorating, kids being out of school, and party hosting can make getting a good night’s sleep a challenge. Repeated late nights and early mornings can cause an elevation of Cortisol, the hormone that regulates a wide range of processes throughout the body, including metabolism and immune response. When your cortisol levels go up, it prompts your skin to produce excess sebum which in turn encourages inflammation in the skin, causing flare-ups in conditions like acne, psoriasis, and even eczema. Getting less than 7 hours of sleep can also play a role in the development of wrinkles, sagging skin, and dark circles under the eyes. The reason? During sleep, your body delivers fluids to organs and tissues that need replenishing, while removing excess fluids from other areas. Cutting this process short is one reason sleep-deprived people often have under-the-eye bags (i.e., pockets of fluid).

There’s a reason why your 40 winks are often referred to as “beauty sleep.” Because the skin is our body’s largest organ, it takes the brunt of most environmental abuse and normally where first signs of damage are visible. The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of sleep per night. When you get enough sleep, Cortisol levels decrease, allowing the body to recover from it’s accumulated daytime stessors, which also include skin damage. During this time, your body releases Human Growth Hormone, a necessary ingredient for collagen production—the protein that gives people shiny hair, strong nails, and glowing skin. This is why nighttime skin creams tend to be “heavier”, as your body is actively working to repair skin during those precious 7-9 hours of sleep.

So be kind to your skin this month and make it a priority to try and get at least seven to eight hours of sleep on a daily basis.

Glycation is when sugar binds to other molecules in your body, such as protein and lipids. This process then leads to a loss of function and impaired elasticity of tissues such as blood vessels, skin, and tendons. Inflammation, which we mentioned earlier is a huge contributor to how our skin looks and feel. If you’ve ever had a post-dinner overindulgence of your favorite sugary sweets, then you know all too well what can happen to your skin overnight. All it takes is one look in the mirror to see how that extra slice of pie went to work on your skin while you were sleeping. Keep in mind, high-glycemic foods isn’t just in candy. White bread, soda, salad dressings, and other baked goods that contain refined and processed sugars and starches that cause your insulin to spike.

We aren’t saying that you shouldn’t avoid treats or sugar, we are saying to use MODERATION. Yes, that word. It really is key to overall success in every aspect of our lives.
