Radio Frequency Treatments & Why You Should Get Them

Who remembers the “facial contouring” craze of 2012? 🙋🏻‍♀️ Remember when Kim Kardashian posted a picture of herself with and without makeup contouring? People went crazy, because now they too could show off perfectly contoured faces with a few makeup tricks. What seems to stand out in my mind is how ridiculous most people looked, but that’s probably just me. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to wake up magazine ready, but the truth is that if you don’t have a good palette to work on, there’s no amount of contouring a person can do to make skin look lifted and springy.

Among the popular non-invasive tissue tightening services used to treat skin wrinkles and laxity, Radiofrequency (RF), which is FDA-cleared is probably one of the most widely used technologies. Why? Because the objective of RF is to stimulate changes in collagen conformation and induce neocollagenesis (that’s fancy for making new collagen) by thermal power (heat) generation in deep layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissue where collagen is formed. When used for cosmetic purposes this technology is highly controlled for safety and is most commonly used for facial skin tightening, body contouring or vaginal rejuvenation. We will be discussing is uses for skin tightening and body contouring only.

So, what is Radio Frequency?
Radio wave frequency (RF) is energy, they are electromagnetic waves (electrical currents). RF is used in many different medical treatments. Cosmetically we use RF to help promote collagen growth within the skin to help reverse the signs of aging. When a client notices that their skin is not as springy and loses laxity, RF treatments such as Thermage are great because the energy will stimulate new collagen growth, which in turns helps restore spring to the skin. The RF energy stimulates your body into producing collagen and to help tighten the existing collagen.

There are three different types of RF available and Beautique Medical spa offers two different types. Why do we have two types of RF? Like a master carpenter with his tools, having multiple equipment provides our skin providers with the ability to truly choose the best option for the client depending on the skin, age, and what part of the body needs skin tightening. Dr. Sanchez chose Thermage and 3Deep by EndyMed for the RF options to offer.

What is the difference between Thermage and 3 Deep?

  • The main difference is that Thermage uses a monopolar This targets the deep collagen below the epidermis, it is a concentrated target of energy below the epidermis.
  • 3 Deep EndyMed is a multisource of radiofrequency that is a type of combination of multipolar and monopolar RF. Therefore, this energy targets 3 different levels of the skin. The energy is spread throughout the 3 different level of the epidermis and below the epidermis so it’s not as concentrated or reaches as deeply as Thermage. This is great to use after Thermage or to start using in your 30s to help stimulate collagen production early. The older you get, the harder it is to stimulate new collagen.

Both Thermage and 3 Deep use a gel or liquid that helps to keep the skin cool. Both will heat of the skin within the same heat tolerance. Side effects are the same for both, which can be mild redness and the skin may feel warm, which may last from a few minutes to about 30 minutes.

Which treatment would be best for me Thermage or 3 Deep EndyMed?
This greatly depends on age and the damage or loss of collagen that a person has lost. For this reason, we require a consultation before these types of treatments so that we can analyze the skin thoroughly and address concerns, explain options, and set expectations.

The assessment portion of the consultation allows the skin specialist to measure the loss of collagen and make an informed decision based on whether the collagen loss is superficial or deep below the epidermis or if it is more superficial, or a combination of both. Age is also a factor into the decision of which machine (Thermage or 3 Deep) would be best. The area to be treated will also determine which treatment option to use. Thermage and 3 Deep can be used mostly anywhere on the body for tightening.

Can I do both treatment options? Can I use both treatment options?
The answer is yes! A person may need to use both Thermage and 3 Deep in order to achieve optimal results. This will greatly depend on the treatment area, loss of collagen and age. For example, a person in their mid 40s may use 3Deep on their face but may need Thermage for the eyes. Another example could be a person may want 3 Deep for buttocks or thighs but need Thermage for the arms. This is one of the reasons why a thorough consultation is crucial.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Because they are two different forms of RF, the amount of treatments needed vary by technology.  Thermage treatments are pretty much schedule one at a time per area treated.  Most clients will get their treatment and will check in for their results in about six months. Oh, before we forget, PATIENCE. Your skin didn’t lose laxity overnight, it won’t regrow collagen overnight either. It will take about six months to really see the plumpness. Most clients will see an immediate smoothness and contouring, and it ONLY gets better with time.  Many Thermage clients will get a second treatment about a 9-12 months after the first treatment if they want.

If we are using 3 Deep, since that technology works differently, we need a series for that. Minimum of 3 for face scheduled a month a part, and a minimum of 6 for body parts also scheduled a month apart. And like we’ve mentioned, sometimes we will combine both therapies depending on what we find during the analysis. But you never have to worry because we will discuss every option along the way so you will never have any surprises when it comes to treatments.

When our clients choose to allow us to transform their skin, they must agree to follow our skincare recommendations. They are spending a lot of money on these treatments and we want to make sure that they are using proper homecare. The reason for this is we want to make sure that the ingredients in the products are safe to use with the services, that they aren’t full of toxins which can damage your skin, we want to make sure that we reduce any sensitivity etc. When getting radiofrequency treatments such as Thermage, it is important to continue using products containing growth factors to help continue the collagen and elastin production.

How Much Does Radio Frequency Cost?
Cost depends on the type of treatment. Pricing ranges from $500 – $2500 per treatment. We offer better pricing on bundles and series, and our members always pay their member pricing 365 days a year. Thermage will be more expensive, but you will need less treatments. This is a technology where the more expensive treatment is not always your best option. After your consultation, we’ll know the type of collagen loss and which machine your skin will respond better to.

Is there any Downtime?
The beauty about these treatments is that there is no downtime. You can go on with your day. You will feel some heat, but your therapist will control the treatment to make you the most comfortable possible.

What Products Should I Use After These Types of Treatments?
Our therapist will make sure that you are on products specifically created to continue to help promote collagen and elastin promotion. Some of our favorite products are:

Antioxidant Complex Serum – $72
A versatile complex that provides instant firming and toning action; may be cocktailed with other serums or moisturizers for added support but is hydrating enough to use alone as a daily moisturizer.

Dermal Contour Pressed Serum $199
A profoundly different skin firmer to create tighter skin that pushes back. With the strength of a serum and the silky hydration of a cream, this lightweight, hybrid formulation visibly improves skin firmness and diminishes the appearance of wrinkles. Working synergistically from within, master hydrator HSA and the skin-firming duo DSA and CSA help support the skin’s growth factors, while hydrating and repairing like nothing else.

Senté Neck Firming Cream $99
Our necks are often neglected, but they reveal one’s true age. This Neck firming cream is an advanced treatment formulated with the master hydrator, HSA and a combination of key ingredients, improves the appearance of skin tone and texture of the delicate skin of the neck and décolletage.

DNA Eye Repair Cream $ 69 This is a luxuriously rich eye crème for the delicate eye area. Helps diminish signs of premature aging. Unscented (natural fragrances from botanicals removed) for even the most sensitive skins.

Congratulations! You now know more about radiofrequency than the average person. Next time you look in the mirror and aren’t 100% happy with the reflection staring back at you, consider starting radiofrequency treatments. Ready to take the next step? Who Wants a Noticeably Younger Look Without Surgery?

We “see” you raising your hand because we’re “raising our hands” right along with you.  We’ve never met a man or woman that who does not want brighter, fresher clearer skin. Not a day goes by that we don’t have someone ask us what can be done for deep wrinkles, spots, and acne scarring. We’re lucky because we’ve been helping McAllen area men and women achieve their skin goals for 18 years now and we have a few options that we can use on our patients to help with their concerns. We choose the option based on their needs, budget, time, skin type/color etc., but time and time again we choose Fraxel to treat fine lines and wrinkles like crow’s feet and brow lines. It also helps smooth out surface scarring by helping to erase effects of acne and other scarring. Reverses Pigmentation concerns by diminishing the appearance of age spots and minimizes Sun Damage by helping to improve the appearance of sun damaged skin. And finally, help treat Actinic Keratosis (AK) which are little bumps that appear on the upper arms.

Why did we choose Fraxel as the resurfacing laser for our patients? Because Fraxel’s impressive results with little downtime is designed to create a younger looking appearance in as little as a single treatment without surgery or injections.  And like we mentioned, this treatment improves tone, texture and radiance for aging, sun damaged, or scarred skin.

If you’re like most of our patients you’ve probably tried fading and wrinkle creams only to be disappointed by their results. You might even have gotten Botox and still see lines on your face and are beginning to wonder if Botox even works. Well, creams and Botox do work, but the key to success is having an expert to guide you and make sure that you are investing your time in money with products and services that work for you. An expert to explain how different services and products work on the skin. We have some patients, especially gentlemen that have come in with those deep ice pick acne scars. And, just like women, they don’t like imperfections either. In fact, in some cases it can affect their confidence and work performance. Fraxel is ideal for these patients because we can gradually resurface the layers of skin to even out the scars. Over a series of sessions, we methodically and carefully smooth away layers of skin to help reveal new smooth skin as it regenerates and begins to heal resulting in a smoother more even texture with a happy side effect of increasing confidence.

We get many questions regarding Fraxel. Some of the most common are as follows:

What is Fraxel?

Dr. Sanchez chose the Fraxel Dual, which is a non-ablative laser that addresses discoloration, age spots, acne scars, fine lines, and rough texture. It is an upgrade on the original Fraxel laser.

What does “Dual” in Fraxel Dual mean?

The Fraxel Dual is actually two lasers in one: a 1927nm wavelength which lets us treat your skin superficially, what we can see on the skin with the naked eye. For example, we use it  to improve pigment such as freckles. The 1550nm wavelength can target skin texture by improving deep lines and acne scars. The best part is that we can use these wavelengths together or separately in a treatment so that we can customize each session, as well as turn the dial up or down depending on skin color so we don’t cause more damage. Operator skill is crucial for these treatments. You really want someone that knows what they’re doing (I wouldn’t Groupon a Fraxel treatment….just saying).

So, like we said, the 1927nm wavelength is for pigment: freckles, sunspots, some types of melasma and the 1550 nm wavelength is actually an erbium non-ablative fractional resurfacing wavelength that goes deeper to treat: wrinkles, acne scars, texture and tone. The best part is the deeper you go, the more thermal injury caused which makes your skin rebuild collagen over the next few months which only makes your skin look better and better with time.

How many treatments will I need?

You will see some improvement in as soon as after one treatment, but the total number of treatments needed depend on what we are treating and what the end goal is; the condition meaning the depth of wrinkles, pigment etc.  Skin color plays a big part as well because darker skin types have to work at much lower settings and will most likely require more sessions. The frequency also is taken into consideration, we are causing controlled trauma to the skin and we need to respect your skin’s natural timetable for healing. You may need 3 treatments and your BFF who  is same age, skin color, etc. may need 5. That’s because when we analyze skin, we are only concerned about the skin in front of us and its needs, we don’t compare it because no two people are identical.

Is Fraxel better than Microneedling or Dermaplaning?

Both are excellent options to improve texture and even pigment with Microneedling.  Same can be said for Chemical Peels, but Fraxel penetrates deeper and will provide more dramatic results. That being said, it is common for us to create a treatment plan that includes a combination of treatments to provide the most dramatic effects.

Does it HURT?

This is a very popular question, and like our Esthetician Veronica says, “I wish I could say Beauty means no pain, but I can’t.” We are working with wavelengths and so you will feel heat and will experience dryness post treatment, but the new Fraxel, like the one we have, is not painful for most patients. In fact, they say the feel a mild pricking sensation, but depending on your pain tolerance level, only you will know if it hurts or not. We do everything in our power to make you comfortable by including numbing cream and using a Zimmer cooler during treatment to help make your experience the best possible, but you’ll love your skin’s results, so you’ll think it’s worth it.

Do I need to Prepare for Fraxel?

Again, depending on your concerns or what you’re trying to achieve we may suggest a Chemical Peel or a series of Diamond Glows before the Fraxel to prepare the skin and accelerate the process, these types of options are discussed during the consultation.

As far as preparing for the Fraxel treatment itself, we ask that you do not use any retinoids, peels, acids, or products that cause sensitivity, but you don’t have to worry about it because we’ll give you all the Pre and Post treatment information you’ll need during you consultation.

How Much does Fraxel Cost?

Fraxel fees vary based on skin condition and area being treated. The most common areas we can treat with Fraxel are your face, neck, chest, hands, and upper arms. Single sessions start at about $1500 for face and go up if we add areas. If you just get your hands done, they can start at around $1000. This treatment like other cosmetic services, is not covered by insurance. In our office we accept Care Credit, offer discounted pricing if a patient pre-pay for a series (3 sessions), or becomes a Beautique Member.

What is the Downtime and What Will Happen to my Skin After my Treatment?

We tell our patients that the process will last about a week. They can expect the first couple of days to be red and may experience slight throbbing and even swelling….think of it like a sunburn. Days three to five you’ll start experience roughing up and peeling on your skin. Do NOT PICK! We don’t care how tempted you are, do NOT PICK at your skin. You can cause a lot of damage if you pick off the peeling skin, you want your skin to heal on its own. We notice that the chest are takes a little bit longer to heal so don’t freak out.

To help the healing process we will recommend that you use the Dermal Repair Cream from Senté.

This Dermal Repair Cream is a super hydrator and is formulated with Heparan Sulfate Analog (HSA). It absorbs quickly and goes beyond surface hydration to restore the skin’s natural ability to renew itself. With continuous use, it is clinically shown to diminish the appearance of wrinkles, while improving skin tone and texture. This unique formulation is appropriate for compromised and sensitive skin making it ideal as a post procedure healer.

If you are interested in purchasing this super hydrator call us at (956) 664-1234 to order.

So, there you have it. The most Fraxel commonly asked questions we get about Fraxel. If this treatment sounds like something you or a loved one could benefit from please call our office at 956-664-1234. Perfect skin starts with a conversation. Let’s have one today.  #RevealYourBelleza

Who Wants Smoother Skin & Smaller Looking Pores?

Discover How One McAllen- Area Woman’s Quest for Smoother Skin & Smaller Pores Led Her to Microneedling and How This Powerhouse Treatment Can Give You the Same Results

We get this request All. The. Time. Clients will come and see us and just say, “I just want my skin to smooth and glowy, and I want my pores smaller”. Being skin experts, we too have our own personal concerns and problem areas that we tackle on a daily basis. Over the last 18 years we have been able to get our hands on most treatments and products, and many services you see as “hype”. Some work, some don’t, some are mediocre at best…we are a medical spa, which is lucky for you, because we understand the anatomy of skin, and how your body reacts physiologically to treatments. So we can weed through the hype and know what’s ACTUALLY going to work and make a difference when it comes to your skin.

When a client comes in asking for smoother more youthful looking skin, we have quite a few treatments that we can suggest. But in the case of Cynthia, she came asking us for very specific outcomes.  Her main skin concerns were that she didn’t like how her skin was feeling dull and tired. When she looked in the mirror, she didn’t like the texture she would see in her reflection and she felt that her pores were looking a bit large.  Can you relate?

She came in to consult with Savannah and after a very comprehensive skin analysis that features the VISIA by Canfield, together they agreed with Savannah’s recommendation that a Microneedling session would probably be the most effective way to start.  When treating dull and tired skin and large pores we immediately want to use an exfoliating treatment such as a Diamond Glow, VI Peel, etc. These types of treatments are great to help minimize the appearance of large pores, and smooth out texture. So why did Savannah recommend a Microneedling treatment? Cynthia already takes regular care of her skin and wanted immediate results. Microneedling also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) which is a minimally invasive procedure which improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars by stimulating existing collagen and elastin. By creating controlled micro-injuries with the fine needles used in this treatment, the body is forced to produce new collagen. She is the perfect age to get treatments that will help her produce more collagen to help lift and plump her face. Once you hit your mid- to late 50s, it’s hard to get your body to induce collagen production. That is why it is the perfect time for Cynthia to be getting regular Microneedling sessions because collagen production naturally takes about six months to see the results in lift etc., but the Microneedling will leave your skin brighter, smoother, pores will look smaller right away.

In fact, those were Cynthia’s words. “I immediately saw the difference, my skin was brighter, texture felt better, I had reduced pores, my skin felt more vibrant and luminous after just one treatment.”

If you are loving how the results of this treatment sound, but are scared because of the needles, you don’t have to be. We make sure that we apply anesthesia before the treatment to numb your skin and you won’t feel anything during the treatment.  Cynthia said that she didn’t feel a thing during the treatment, and that after as she was healing, she was expecting a lot of pain, but had a very easy healing process. She compared how it felt to having a light sunburn, which is why we make sure that if you decide to get this treatment you will go home with the perfect post care product to help speed your healing process and keep you comfortable the whole time.

“I so recommend it. I’m addicted to this treatment….sold!” If you’re ready to have vibrant, luminous skin do what  Cynthia did and come in for a Perfect Complexion Analysis. Wait…That’s How Microneedling Works?!?!

Of all the clinical anti-aging treatments on the market, micro-needling, or Collagen Induction Therapy, is perhaps the most unusual in its application for creating younger skin. I supposed in a way we really are “turning back the clock” on aging. It works by using fine, acupuncture-like needles to create hundreds of tiny, invisible puncture wounds in the top layer of skin. It may not sound appealing. But this minimally invasive treatment—when done in-office by a trained aesthetician, dermatologist, or plastic surgeon—can be very effective. “The micro-injuries you create stimulates the body’s natural wound healing processes, resulting in cell turnover and increased collagen and elastin production, therefore reversing as well as preventing signs of aging. Microneedling works the same way lasers do, only you’re injuring the skin mechanically instead of using heat or light.

And the best part is that this service works beneath the surface of your skin, so downtime is minimal and you can reap all the benefits! Just a few are:

  • A visible reduction in large pores
  • Smoothing of wrinkles and filling deep lines
  • Improvement of depressed acne scarring
  • Reduction in that appearance of stretch marks (very few things are proven to treat stretchmarks)
  • Thicken the skin layers for more elasticity
  • Reduction in cellulite

While we absolutely LOVE Microneedling, there are services that we like to pair with this treatment for accelerated results. Pairing treatments can provide you with the customization your skin needs, along with helping you reach your skin goals even quicker. One of our absolutely favorite combination treatments is Diamond Glow before a Microneedling Treatment. By performing the Diamond Glow before Microneedling, we can make sure that roughness is smoothed out allowing the microneedles to move across fresh, exfoliated skin so that the needles can penetrate evenly and your skin can absorb the serums to the deeper levels of your skin.

Another favorite treatment pairing is a BeautiLight Treatment which is a combination of LED Light Therapy that helps speed up collagen production along with specific serums or masks chosen for your skin the help your skin absorb the serums better or to help your skin heal and recover faster leaving you with smoother, softer, more youthful-looking skin. So, you see, the treatment is chosen based on your skin needs. Do we need to treat texture, or help nourish your skin and help build more collagen? That is part of the process we use to create your perfectly unique protocol.

Micro-needling is so versatile it can be used on the face, neck and body! And it’s suitable for all skin types, including thin and previously lasered skin. We use a topical anesthetic, which makes the treatment extremely comfortable. But before you get any treatment done, it is important to do your homework. In the wrong hands, Microneedling can actually cause more harm than good. Veronica, our Lead Aesthetician for the past 17 years, had a client come in severely broken out. After a few questions were asked, the client told Veronica that she had gotten a Microneedling treatment somewhere else. Upon analysis, Veronica figured out why the client broke out so badly, she had active congestion, and because the congestion had not been cleared before the Microneedling session, that bacteria spread all over her face and caused her to break out badly.

So you see, it’s important to have a “clean canvas” as Veronica calls it. When you choose Beautique for your Medspa treatments you can be sure that we will be honest about whether or not a particular treatment is right for you, even if that means we have to tell you “no”. Your skin’s health is our priority and you’ll thank us in the end. Trust us. Watch the video below where Veronica is sharing the story about her client’s Microneedling experience at another practice.

Do you have a skin condition we haven’t mentioned here? Ask us about it. We can tell you if micro-needling will work for you.  You can call us at 956-664-1234.

Microneedling: Transforming Skin & Lives One Session at a Time

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Whatever Grandmother came up with that saying was wise beyond her years. Okay, so I don’t know who came up with that saying, but I love to imagine it was a wise Granny.

Whether you get monthly facials and anti-aging services or not, starting smart skin care in your 20s is something that your 50-year-old self will thank you for. “But what if I’m already in my 50s, can I still have skin I love?” you may ask…Absolutely! One of our game-changing procedures for not only prevention, but correction as well, is Microneedling and Microneedling with PRP.

Microneedling might sound intimidating. Anyone saying “no thanks” to the word needle? Many have that same initial reaction, but the truth is that Microneedling is one of the best treatments you can get. Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that improves the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars by stimulating existing collagen and elastin.

Common Questions About Microneedling:

How Microneedling Works.
Your body treats a small wound the same way as a large wound, and sends fibroblasts to create more collagen in the affected area We are basically tricking your skin into thinking it has been wounded, but as a result, we’re thickening the skin and improving the texture with this procedure. The treatment can also help reduce pore size and heal acne scars,

We know that rolling a bunch of little needles across your face sounds crazy and even a bit barbaric, but it works. We promise. This is why. By rolling the teeny tiny needles across your skin, we are opening little channels in the skin which allow your growth factors and serums to penetrate and actually transform the skin the way they are intended to.  Of course, the caveat is always, do this under the experienced hand of a trained professional. If not, you could really damage your skin and cause more sensitivity and in some cases scarring. The exact opposite of what you are trying to do.  Listen, we are all about saving money and DIY projects, but when it comes to our skin… that is a hard pass. Your face is definitely not where you should be scrimping, saving, or experimenting on.

Is Microneedling really effective?
Microneedling is generally a safe and effective procedure that can improve the appearance of the skin. It may reduce wrinkles, diminish scarring, and tighten or rejuvenate loose or aging skin. Depending on the type of stretch mark, we often use this treatment to minimize stretch marks.

How often should you get Microneedling treatments?
The frequency of your treatments will depend on the type of your concerns and results you’re looking to achieve along with your skin’s sensitivity. This is why we can’t stress enough the importance of getting your Microneedling treatments with a professional. While it may be tempting to buy into the “Do it at Home” devices, these can lead to keloiding (scarring) or can spread bacteria on acneic skin and cause further infections. Remember, with most treatments, a series will always give you best results. The way collagen induction works is by creating tiny, controlled wounds, which causes the skin to “heal” by producing collagen. It takes about 4-6 months to fully see the results of collagen stimulation. This is how our body’s natural collagen and healing process works. So by treating the skin in a series or sessions under a controlled period of time, we will be able to accelerate the results. We can also take your Microneedling to the next level with PRP.

Who should not get a Microneedling treatment?
A true professional will tell you not to have a  Microneedling treatment if you’re currently experiencing an acne breakout. It’s also not recommended if you have rosacea or eczema, as the procedure can worsen your symptoms. At Beautique Medical Spa you will have a thorough Perfect Complexion Analysis which will help your skin expert determine if you are a candidate for this treatment and create a very customized treatment plan for you.

What could go wrong?
As with any procedure, Microneedling can have potential complications including bleeding, bruising, infection, scarring, and pigmentation. This is why we do not recommend doing this at home, unless you are under the care and direction of an expert.

What are the post-treatment instructions?
We recommend avoiding any anti-inflammatory medications for one week after the procedure. No ice on your face and avoid using arnica or bromelain. Avoid sun, tanning and exposure to direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks. All of our patients get a very complete Pre and Post Treatment Instructions along with the personal cell phone numbers of our doctor and nurse practitioner.

After your Microneedling treatment, you will need to be on skin repairing products. We will recommend what is appropriate for your skin. One of the best super hydrators you can use is Dermal Repair Cream $162 by Senté Labs. Formulated with Heparan Sulfate Analog (HSA), SENTÉ® Dermal Repair Cream absorbs quickly and goes beyond surface hydration to restore the skin’s natural ability to renew itself. With continuous use, it is clinically shown to diminish the appearance of wrinkles, while improving skin’s overall tone and texture.

Lifting Complex Serum $194 by Nelly du Vuyst to continue the regenerating process. The Lifting Complex Serum helps prevent and minimize the visible signs of aging. Specifically formulated with a blend of bio-peptides known for their rejuvenating and repairing properties, this serum contributes to visibly reduce the appearance of deep and superficial wrinkles caused by the lack of hydration, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. The skin looks plumper, smoother and softer. An ideal serum to use post Microneedling.

While we may have a few different skincare options to use post Microneedling, those are two of our favorites. Another benefit of working with us is that we will tailor your treatment for the results you want by possibly combining services such as PRP, LED, and other powerhouse facial treatments to optimize your results.

If you’re ready to transform your skin, the first step is a consultation.  Call us at (956) 664-1234 to reserve your Perfect Complexion Analysis today.

Sunscreen 101: Everything You Need To Know To Be Sun Safe This Season

We know that you know that using sunscreen is important, but did you know that you need to use it daily (even if you’re not in the sun) from head to toe.  Not only does sunscreen help prevent skin aging, but research also shows that regular daily use can reduce the risk of squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, which are two types of skin cancer. While there are some controversial topics about sunscreen- that it’s not healthy for you- concerning skin’s health and anti-aging. There are still healthy habits to develop, some myths that need to be busted and surprising places where you can (and should) apply your SPF daily to help prevent some of those nasty skincare concerns in the future.

SPF Moisturizer or Facial Sunscreen?

If you choose a SPF moisturizer, make sure it has sunscreen ingredients. There are many different formulations out there to suit almost everyone’s skin type and preferences. If you’re prone to acne, choose an oil-free product. Looking for a little bit of color then try a tinted moisturizer. No matter what, if you’re relying on moisturizer for sun protection, it should have an SPF of 15 or higher and be labeled: broad spectrum, which means it protects against UVA & UVB rays.

If you don’t use a SPF moisturizer then look for a sunscreen that’s formulated specifically for the face. These tend to be more lightweight than traditional sunscreens and are often made to go underneath cosmetics or everyday wear. After cleansing your face in the morning, apply your moisturizer or facial sunscreen.

There are a few other interesting places that you probably wouldn’t think of adding SPF, but these are just as important and crucial as the face:

  • Put Sunscreen on Your Lips: Lips are especially prone to UV damage, and since they go uncovered nearly all the time it’s important to keep them protected. Look for an SPF lip balm and pay special attention to your bottom lip—it gets the most sun exposure and is 12 times more likely to develop skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
  • Don’t forget your hands: Since your hands are one of the first areas to show signs of premature aging, they definitely shouldn’t go without sunscreen. After you apply the rest of your sunscreen and wash your hands, put a bit of sunscreen on the back of one hand and rub the backs of your hands together for full protection minus the slippery grip.
  • SPF your feet: You need to apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet if you want to avoid flip-flop tan lines (not to mention a painful burn) when you’re out and about in the sunny warm weather- not just at the pool or beach.

Should You Choose a Sunscreen Solely on SPF?

Instead of focusing solely on the SPF, keep an eye out for broad-spectrum sunscreens. A broad-spectrum sunscreen will ensure your skin is protected against UVA and UVB rays alike to prevent both premature aging and sunburns. Sunscreens that offer additional benefits are becoming very popular. While SPF plays a role in sun protection, it shouldn’t be the decider when determining an effective sunscreen. Selecting a sun care product isn’t as simple as picking the one with the highest SPF. SPF 30 or greater is usually sufficient, as it shields against 97% of harmful UVB rays. SPF 50 is another popular choice, but this only increases the number of rays avoided by one percent. Broad-spectrum sun protection with 22.5% zinc oxide and 22.5% titanium dioxide. It also protects against infrared radiation as well as blue light and pollution with potent antioxidants.

Are You Using Expired Sunscreen?

All sunscreen should have an expiration date. It’s usually found on the bottom of your bottle or by the barcode. But what if your product doesn’t have an expiration date on its container? First, don’t panic. This isn’t a sign your sunscreen is any less legit. The FDA requires all sunscreens to include expiration dates, unless it’s proven to last over three years. If you bought sunscreen without an expiration date, then we recommend writing the date you purchased it and open it on the container… This will provide you with a better idea of how long your sunscreen remains effective.

When you use an expired sunscreen, you’re always shortchanging your skin. In addition to being less effective, expired sunscreens may actually make your complexion more sensitive to the sun, increasing the chances of premature aging, burns and even skin cancer. Expired chemical ingredients, like octinoxate and oxybenzone, tend to oxidize while physical ingredients, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, separate or take on a gritty texture. Sunscreens are also recommended to be used within a year of opening to prevent possible exposure to bacteria. If a sunscreen starts to smell off, it’s best to discard it to avoid breakouts or other future concerns. However, if you’re practicing proper sun care habits, your sunscreen should run out long before it reaches its expiration date.

Remember, sunscreen shouldn’t be limited to when you’re in the sun, pool or beachside. Sunscreen should be worn every single day- rain or shine, men and women alike. You may not notice all the benefits now, but the advantage of using sunscreen is felt (and seen) in the long run. There is no specific time to start using sunscreen. It is always better to be late than never. Enjoy the sun 365 days with a liberal dab of sunscreen and Reveal Your Belleza

Spring Your Beauty Routine Forward With These Skin Hacks

Spring forward – Fall back. Each spring and autumn we (well most of us…we’re looking at you New Mexico and Hawaii) follow the tradition of setting our clocks ahead one hour in the spring and back one hour in the fall. The extra hour during the warmer spring and summer months gives us an extra hour of daylight, it saves energy as the nights are shorter and people don’t need to use lights until later in the evening. If you’re anything like us here at Beautique Medical Spa, you’ve also probably started the countdown to spring back in January sometime.

With Daylight Savings and the Spring Equinox right around the corner, (FYI our time change is this Sunday, March 8th and the first day of spring is March 19th) it’s a fine time to start thinking about “Springing” up your skin care routine in anticipation of the warmer weather that is yet to come and start getting Spring Skin ready. Here are a few tips on what you can do:

Don’t let old or expired cosmetic products pile up in your medicine cabinet and beauty shelves. In fact, with that extra hour this Sunday, use it to go through all your products and toss the ones that are old or expired. Throw away anything at least 6 months to a year old. Makeup brushes, too, are often overlooked, and can store unwanted germs and viruses, so now it a good time to wash them with brush cleanser or a gentle shampoo.

Expired cosmetics don’t serve your skin well and can actually cause acne, rashes, itching and other uncomfortable skin irritations. Keep what you need and toss what you don’t, and any products that are rancid or that have separated beyond their manufacturer’s suggestions should be immediately tossed and considered harmful to the skin.

Chances are that even though the calendar says spring is on the way, it might take a few days or weeks for the weather to actually catch up. Once the temperature does begin to heat up it is a good idea to revisit your facial routine and swap out certain products such as heavier serums to lighter options to better accommodate the needs of the skin during this time. Warmer months bring spontaneous trips to South Padre Island so products that serve double duty such as tinted moisturizers or multi-purpose products mean less to have to throw in your bag without compromising your skin. These little hacks can make all the difference:

  • Switch your regular cream-based cleanser with a gentle exfoliating cleanser. We recommend SENTÈ Exfoliating Cleanser is formulated with a proprietary blend of phytic acid, glycolic acid, and galactoarabinan to accomplish exfoliation of the skin with minimal irritation.
  • Follow it up with a toner/hydrating spray that can also double up as setting spray for your makeup to keep your skin clear. We offer many different options from Iredale Mineral Cosmetics. Each formulation is specifically designed to help by individual conditions.
  • Lighten up your moisturizer. Switch to lighter body and face creams that will leave your skin less sticky and hydrated at the same time. You can also use tinted moisturizers which can serve be used on your face and body. At the office we use Sentè’s Tinted moisturizer, or our Mineral makeup from Iredale Cosmetics. Come check us out to find your perfect option and we can also analyze your skin using the VISIA figure out which is the right treatment for you this spring.

You should be using sunscreen every single day (even when it’s storming and snowing outside), but if you aren’t using one regularly, spring is the time to start. With the weather warming up, this means more and more weekend brunches will be spent dining al fresco, so you got to make sure that you’re protected. Remember, if you are doing all of this work trying to get great skin but aren’t wearing sunscreen, you might as well not even try.  We absolutely love Iredale Cosmetics Powder Me SPF, so convenient and safe enough for babies to use because of its superior ingredients and convenient packaging makes this an ideal product to have in your bag of tricks.

This is the time to start purging, get rid of the old and in with the new. If you’ve been toying around with the idea of getting a chemical peel, we recommend the VI PEEL.  With five formulations available, we can transform your skin 7 days and now is definitely the time to get it! Did you know that peels aren’t just for your face?  Nope. In fact, the VI PEEL is a fantastic option for body areas such as: back, arms, chest, legs etc. A Peel now will help you reveal beautiful skin this Season.

One last Tool that you should consider having in your pocket is Hygia Multi Use Oil by Nelly du Vuyst. With its specific blend of antiseptic and bacteriostatic essential oils of lavender, thyme, rosemary, geranium and eucalyptus, this multi-use oil can be used on the face and body and is  ideal for oily or impure skin prone to acne with papules, pustules and can also be used on burns, wounds, tattoos, etc. The skin’s complexion looks clearer and healthier. Your medicine cabinet should never be without it.

Who’s ready for longer, lazier days? 🙌🏻  Us too. We are ready to help you Reveal Your Belleza as your spring forward into this new season!

The Eyes Have It: Your Answer to Brighter More Youthful Looking Eyes

Ever wish your eyes would hide your secrets a little better? Does the whole world really need to know that you pulled an all-nighter with the baby last night, or that your GNO lasted a little longer than you planned (and may have included a little more wine that intended)? The experts at Beautique Medical Spa believe that everyone has the right to be able to show off a bright, youthful, and hydrated eye area, and now everyone can thanks to our Brite EYES treatments.

Contrary to popular belief and old wives’ tales, unwanted dark circles and hollow under eyes are usually more about anatomy rather than your lifestyle choices. Phew! It’s nice to know that some of the things we don’t like to see on our faces just happen and not because of the extra wine we drank. In fact, the most common reason for the appearance of hollow dark circles is volume loss in the under-eye area, also called ‘tear troughs’. Volume loss in the tear trough area is one of the earliest signs of physiological ageing and becomes deeper and darker in appearance as one gets older.

The under-eye area may have a hollowed look due to genetics, volume loss due to aging, from environmental and health factors such as excessive sun exposure, or habits such as cigarette smoking that can affect the skin internally and externally. Hollowness can affect the whole under eye area all the way to the upper cheeks, or just the small area directly below the eyes called the tear trough. In the last few years we have seen a considerable rise in the number of women and men seeking tear trough filler treatment to revitalize their tired-looking eyes. In fact, it is one of our most requested services by our Rio Grande Valley residents. This week we are going to dive deep into why we start to lose volume, when we start to lose volume, and what we can do to help you show off your Brite Eyes with confidence.

An under eye filler treatment involves the injection of a hyaluronic acid solution under the skin below the eyes. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is found naturally in almost every cell in the body but has the greatest concentrations in the skin tissue. In fact, almost 50% of the body’s HA is found in the skin. It is found in both the deep underlying dermal areas as well as the visible epidermal top layer. As we age our skin begins to lose hyaluronic acid and hollow areas and wrinkles start developing.

So, what does hyaluronic acid have to do with giving us brighter more youthful eyes?  It is the main ingredient found in the dermal fillers we use such as Juvéderm, which provides our patients with a long-lasting, non-surgical option containing a modified form of HA making it the top choice with our injecting team. Since hyaluronic acid fillers are soft and blend into the surrounding skin, they create the most natural effect under eyes. These injections rejuvenate the skin and help it to look smoother and plumper. They fill in the hollows under the eyes and integrate with the skin to smooth it out and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and shadows. The results are visibly instant and will make your skin look more youthful. And the best part, they can last up to 2 years!

There are many different types of under eye filler injections. The following are some of the most popular options:

  • Restylane: This is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that is highly versatile and can be used under the eyes and in the cheeks and lips.
  • Belotero: This filler is similar to Restylane, but it’s easier to layer and seems to work better for addressing very fine lines.
  • PRP (platelet-rich plasma): Also known as a “vampire facelift,” this is a two-step procedure that uses your own purified blood plasma (stem cells) to heal, smooth, and regenerate the skin.
  • Juvéderm: This is the US’s most popular and administered filler that is specially manufactured to present a natural and smoother look.

We know there are a lot of products on the market, thankfully you don’t have to worry about which product to use. Leave that to the experts.

The most crucial part of any Dermal Filler journey is the consultation. A consultation can make or break your results. In fact, the consultation is SUCH an important part of our practice that we have consultations with our clients every 3-4 months to review and update their progress. We use the VISIA by Canfield to take a number of precise pictures of your face and skin to be able to get a true reading of what you need (and how far you’ve come over time).  We can see whether those dark circles and hollowness you are experiencing is because of lifestyle or genetic influences etc. Once we have a proper assessment of your skin, your injector can map out a concrete treatment plan to help you during this journey and guide you every step of the way. In our practice we choose to use the Juvéderm family of hyaluronic acids because we love that they are the gold standard in the Cosmetic Industry. Their results are consistent, predictable, and we have very little to no complications with these products. No matter which type of under eye filler you decide to use, there are lots of benefits that come with choosing fillers over other types of cosmetic treatments.

Tear trough filler is considered a safe ‘advanced’ injectable procedure, which when performed by an appropriately trained and skilled doctor in the procedure, is associated with minimal risks. Bruising and redness are common in the delicate under eye area but spontaneously resolves within a week or two. Once you get past the apprehension of having a needle placed that close to your eye, the procedure is relatively quick and painless. If you watched this week’s What You Want to Know Wednesday segment on YouTube, you’ll see how our Advanced Nurse Practitioner Stephanie explained how she uses cannulas for this treatment and what they are. All of our injectors use cannulas for these types of treatments to maximize comfort and minimize bruising. For sensitive types, “topical numbing creams can be applied to the area 30 minutes prior to the procedure to minimize discomfort. Another reason why we love Juvéderm is because it already comes with built in lidocaine which provides patience with comfort and helps save them time any money on numbing. Over the counter creams such as Arnica may also help minimize any bruising if applied after the procedure. We also provide each of our patients with very thorough Pre and Post Treatment instructions and our patients do not go home without our injectors private cell phone numbers and a follow up visit.

  • Less Recovery Time: One of the best things about fillers is the fact that there is very little downtime required after you receive them. With more invasive procedures you would need several days or weeks to recover, but with fillers you can receive the injections and get right back to your daily routine.
  • Fast Procedure: The process of receiving fillers is very efficient, and most of the time, you can be in and out in just about an hour.
  • Long Lasting Results: These results appear right away, and they also last for quite a while. Most of our patients find that their results last for six to nine months. They also find that, with subsequent filler injections, they need them even less frequently.

If you’re on the fence about under eye filler treatments, knowing what to expect from the treatment can help put you at ease. A typical under eye filler treatment with us at Beautique Medical Spa goes something like this:

  • When you arrive at Beautique, one of our Cosmetic Injectors will chat with you about the procedure and find out what you’re hoping to achieve. It’s all about expectations. This is when you will have your Perfect Complexion Analysis with the VISIA. The Injector will also want to find out about your lifestyle, cosmetic habits and find out whether or not you are currently using eye products to help strengthen that sensitive skin. In fact we have at least 5-6 different eye creams and eye treatments formulated to treat different issues for different ages. One of our favorites that work well across generations is SENTÈ Illuminè Eye Cream® which is powered by its patented Heparan Sulfate Analog (HAS) technology which improves the appearance of your skin around the eye in as early as 2 weeks. It is also clinically proven to diminish the appearance of dark circles, lines, wrinkles and puffiness around the eye area. In fact, our patients must be using an eye cream when we do these services because we need to make sure that the skin is being strengthened in order to have the best outcome possible.
  • Your Cosmetic Injector will then choose the most appropriate product or treatment for you and discuss the options and process.
  • The actual injection process includes a very fine needle or a cannula under the skin.

The whole process takes about an hour for the first treatment with consultation. If you need further treatments those are usually about 30-45 minutes. You’ll be in and out in no time at all. You can usually go back to work after receiving injections. However, we usually recommend taking the rest of the day off in order to relax and heal properly.

Under eye fillers are a great option for folks who are interested in a minimally invasive, low-risk procedure that will help to smooth out and plump up their skin. If you’re thinking about getting hyaluronic acid injections, it’s very important that you connect with the cosmetic injector and you trust them.  At Beautique we have our Medical Director and Injector that has served the McAllen Area since 1977. His newest member is Nurse Practitioner Stephanie Brown who is a an Advanced Cosmetic Injector for over 10 years as well as a Certified Allergan Cosmetic Trainer, Nurse Deenis who has been practicing Cosmetics in the Rio Grande Valley for over five years, Obed Alvarez, who is Dr. Sanchez’s right hand man and has been with our practice since day one back in 2002, and Nurse Practitioner Gio which makes our Medical Team one of the most experienced team in the Rio Grande Valley. Why do we tell you all this, because we know the importance of being part of a team and we would love the opportunity to help you reach your aesthetic goals.

Give us a call today (956) 664-1234 and together we can Reveal Your Belleza.

How To Have The Skin You Dreams No Matter How Old You Are

“To Age” is defined on as “growing old or apparently old”. The same principle can be applied to our skin. Fact: We age…Every. Single. Day. Guess what? So does our skin. We are all born with beautiful baby soft skin. My perfect seven-week-old niece Katherine has the most amazingly soft-as-silk skin and as a person in the “industry” I can’t help but look at her and wish I could have her skin. I am also overwhelmingly overcome with the desire to shield her from the skin problems that she will encounter as she ages. Skin problems such as acne breakouts that will encounter once she reaches her teen years (and may linger into adulthood), to dullness, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation she will experience throughout the different decades of her life. Katherine’s lucky because she’s been born into a skin obsessed family. Her mama and favorite aunt happen to be skin experts and will be able to guide her in her journey by creating the perfect skin care routines to help her overcome both physiological and environmental issues as she ages.

Like Katherine, you too are lucky. You know that your skin also needs a skin care routine to help you navigate these tricky skin situations (“skinuations”), you have the expert team at Beautique Medical Spa to create your skin routines based upon what is going on in your life and your surrounding environment. Wait, did I just coin a new phrase- Skinuations. See what I did there? Clever huh? LOL. Back to what’s important. The products that saved your skin in your high school and college years won’t cut it once you hit 30. Remember Clearasil and St. Ives Apricot Scrub? Certain ingredients are more important than others, especially when your skin experiences changes as you age and you move from wrinkle prevention to wrinkle correction, you’re going to be needing a whole new approach to skin care.

This is why we’ve created Beautique Medical Spa’s Beauty thru the Ages: A Step-by-Step Guide to Getting the Skin You Dreams. Having beautiful skin is completely obtainable regardless of your age as long as you understand that the Season of Life, we are living in dictates the care of our skin. Our Guide helps you build your skin care routine based on your decade. It’s no secret that our skin changes and in addition to our environment and lifestyle, hormones play a big part on how our skin ages.

Tumultuous Twenties. So many amazing milestones happen during our twenties. We graduate college, maybe meet our soulmate, eat whatever we want and still burn off the calories, reach drinking age, spend lazy days on the sun-drenched beach. Instagram was made for the twenty-something year old. Just look at their pictures. But these are also tumultuous for a reason, stress is introduced into our lives as we start “adulting”, and those great milestones such as being able to drink and spend lazy days on the beach can have serious repercussions on our skin. Environmental skin aging is mainly responsible for aging issues during this time and the skin habits created during this decade lay the foundation for your skin’s future. Take it from us. Establish a skin routine now because your 20s can be a difficult and challenging time. Right now, your skin looks bright, bouncy and plump, but in a few decades all of that will change. The earlier you start, the better. And establishing a 4-Step skincare routine focused on cleansing, exfoliating, toning, and moisturizing now will be better for you in the long run to help you prevent wrinkles. Since you probably don’t have a lot of wrinkles right now, the focus of your skincare routine should be SPF & protection- this will be a key ingredient.

  1. Cleanse: Wash your face before bed to get the day’s grime of oil, makeup, pollution and dirt off to decrease the risk of clogged pores and acne.
  2. Acne Treatment: When it comes to your 20s, pimples will occur, and regardless of whether they happen all the time, or every once in a while, it’s always good to have a spot acne treatment on hand. Many toners and/or exfoliators treat acne. Important Tip: Don’t over treat, it can make matters worse!
  3. Moisturizer: Whether you have acne-prone skin in your 20s or not, everyone needs a moisturizer in their skin care regimen. If you have oily skin and are worried, pick a product that is oil-free. If you have acne or redness, pick one with niacinamide (Vitamin B3) which will help combat redness and help prevent early signs of aging.
  4. Sunscreen: All skin care regimen must include broad spectrum sunscreen and should be worn all year round-no matter the season! Protecting yourself from the sun decreases your risk of getting skin cancer and slows the signs of aging. Studies show that the sun’s UV radiation causes 90% of skin aging, so it’s never too early to start protecting your skin. We absolutely love Bio Organic Mineral Sunscreen by Nelly du Vuyst. It is the first translucent mineral anti-aging sun protection that provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection to prevent sunburns and offer daily protection against urban and digital pollution. Bet you didn’t think you had to use SPF to protect your face from your computer, did you?

Flirty Thirties. Who remembers the movie Thirteen Going on Thirty? Wasn’t that just the most amazing movie. I doubt there is a woman alive that couldn’t relate to the thirteen-year-old just dying to be 30. I find myself thinking of my daughter when I watch that movie and just want to tell her “Slow down honey. Your time will come waaay too soon.” As a woman who turns 45 years old tomorrow, may I give you a little advice? Enjoy your thirties. This is your time to Thrive. If you choose to have children, this is your time to be that awesome mom you were born to be, enjoy your husband, climb that corporate ladder, travel, and establish a militant self-care routine. You will find yourself pulled in so many directions, but I promise you, the BEST thing you can do for yourself is carve out Self Care time on your calendar and do NOT break those appointments. Some of the best Self Care you can do is prioritize your Skin Routine. We have tricks to help hide the effect the sleepless nights you will spend pacing back and forth as you soothe your babies to sleep will have on your skin.

30s Skin Care Routine: Now it’s time to up the anti-aging ante. For the most part you should’ve already started a basic skin care routine. (Especially the sunscreen part- seriously wear it every day!) But because you may be noticing deeper crow’s feet, more prominent frown lines, and a little less bounce as collagen production starts to slow down, it might be a good idea to add some stronger anti-aging formulations into the mix.

  • Retinol: Darling, meet your skin’s BFF…Ms. Retinol. Seriously, you two will be lifelong friends. To help maintain a strong skin foundation and stimulate collagen production, add on topical retinol. Also known as vitamin A, retinol is an anti-aging powerhouse that can reduce blemishes, boost cell regeneration and target premature signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles and more. Not all Retinols are made equally. Certain formulations can be harsh and as a result we find that many clients will stop using retinol because they didn’t like the adjustment period. Well, you know we don’t take any excuses, we hunted and tracked down one of the best retinols’ hands down. Meet the Bio Complete Serum by Sentè Labs. This serum is a lightweight nighttime formula that combines the benefits of patented HAS (Heparan Sulfate Analog) technology with sustained release retinoids and other key ingredients for the appearance of firmer and smoother skin with minimal irritation. In fact, 88% of patients show improved skin smoothness and fine lines and wrinkles in 8 weeks and 100% of patients show improved skin texture in 8 weeks. The more powerful younger sister to this product is called Intensive Bio Complete and is just a stronger percentage of retinoids. Tip: You should only use retinols and night and do NOT, I repeat do NOT use retinols if Pregnant or lactating.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: As collagen production starts to diminish, fine lines may start to become more noticeable. Keep your complexion plump and hydrated with hyaluronic acid, a humectant that helps attract moisture to skin.
  • Eye Cream: Since the first signs of age appear around the eye, now is the time to use a nourishing eye cream to ensure this thin skin gets the hydration it needs. In addition to nourishing the eye contour, eye cream can also help reduce the look of premature signs of eye aging, like fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s-feet.

Forever Fabulous. so this is my decade, and there are still days that I can’t believe “I’m in my 40s.” I won’t lie, the adjustment period was hard, but I turn 45 tomorrow and I can finally say, that I am embracing this new stage in my life happily. My daughter is now seven, and I see the amazing human she is becoming and feel so privileged to help shape her. In our forties we know who we are, and don’t have to change to fit in any longer. And, I even get asked by younger women to share my wisdom with them, and that can be fun at times. Like the good habits that we have established regarding our careers, parenting, and being a partner to our spouses, the good skin care habits we established earlier are being rewarded. Now, if you didn’t treat your skin very kindly during your youth, don’t stress, there is still time to reverse some of the damage that has been caused and help you look Forever Fabulous going forward.

40s Skin Care Routine: By this point you should be maintaining the good habits you’ve already set—a solid skincare routine, SPF every day, and healthy lifestyle choices like not smoking and drinking plenty of water—now is the time to pay closer attention to the quality of your sleep. By your 40s, your skin turnover rate has slowed to more than double that of your early 20s (45 days vs. 20 days on average).
Your healing from scrapes and hormonal acne takes much longer, and you’ve had plenty of time in the sun and pollution to damage your skin’s DNA, increasing our risk of cancer and breaking down of our skin’s collagen faster than you can replace it. Wrinkles appear in areas of the face with the most movement, such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes and mouth. Now it’s time to take your skincare level up a whole few notches. We also suggest investing in a few products that will make catching those Zz’s a little more blissful, such as cooling bed sheets, a good white noise machine, lavender essential oil sprinkled on your sheets, and silk pillowcases (the gentle fabric won’t tug and pull while you snooze, contributing to fewer wrinkles).

  • Antioxidant Serum: As you start to age, you’ll notice that your body takes a bit longer to recuperate. As your skin’s natural antioxidant defenses start to slow down, the skin cannot protect itself as well as it once could from the environment. It can start to take longer for the skin cells to replace themselves and correct the daily damage done to it, which is why in addition to protecting your skin with sunscreen and moisturizer, it’s time to add in the power of antioxidants as another layer of protection. Two antioxidants to keep on your radar. Vitamins C and E. Multiple studies show that antioxidant serums with vitamins C and E can protect your skin against photo-aging and lighten pigment. These vitamins function as antioxidants, neutralizing the damaging free radicals created by the sun and pollution before they activate the breakdown of collagen
  • Anti-aging Face Cream: No matter your age, face cream is always a must. However, for your 40s you should use a more focused moisturizer that helps target signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and more. One of our favorites is Cellular-Matrix Cream by Nelly du Vuyst. This cream is specifically formulated to restore youthful and revitalized look to your skin. Made with salmon DNA and borage seed oil which is known for their repairing, nourishing and regenerating properties, this ultra-light and velvety formula helps prevent and minimize the appearance of aging signs such as wrinkles and fine lines.

Phenomenal 50s AND BEYOND. With each decade you start to experience a significant change in your skin and beauty—and for women over 50 and 60, and beyond these changes can become more challenging. Lines and wrinkles become more noticeable as your skin becomes drier, thinner and more sensitive. Resulting in thinner, looser skin as it begins to lose collagen and elastin. At this point in your skin care journey, the focus should be in maintaining your skin health, and making sure your skin has everything it needs to protect and defend itself against further damage.

  • Peptides: In your 50s, and beyond you want to boost skin selectivity as much as you can. You should look for specialized ingredients like growth factors and peptides, which act like messengers to stimulate activity of your skin cells. When you apply topical peptides, they minimize wrinkles and give your skin a more youthful appearance. Peptides can be more effective in stimulating corrective pathways in the skin that have slowed with age.
  • Rich Face Cream: Women in their 50s should use products that hydrate the skin. As you age, the skin continues to thin, making it dry, more sensitive and easily damaged. Look for products made with oils like jojoba or castor seed in their protective and emollient qualities, and humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid that can pull water back to your skin. The thicker, the better.
  • Eyelash & Brow Conditioner: Another must-try product for your 50s? Eyelash and brow conditioner. As we age, “hair growth—including, eyelashes and eyebrows—begins to slow down. So, adding a specific product that can help with this repercussion can promote longer, fuller, more youthful-looking eyelashes and brows. We love Revitalash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner & Serum to help grow longer lashes. This original one-of-a-kind, Ophthalmologist developed eyelash conditioner enhances the look of lashes and protects against breakage while improving health, flexibility and strength for lashes that thrive naturally. And for brows we highly recommend Revitalash Advanced Eyebrow Conditioner & Serum. This conditioner addresses the visible signs of eyebrow aging due to chemical and environmental stressors, over-plucking and styling products, which lead to healthier looking, more luxurious brows.

Taking care of your skin is important- no matter what the age. It’s a simple and easy way to help you maintain youth and prevent wrinkles and loss of elasticity from developing so quickly. Of course, other factors take place as well such as: stress, lack of sleep, not enough water and unhealthy eating habits are factors as well. All of the products mentioned above are available at Beautique Medical Spa and our team of experts is always ready to help you customize your skincare routine specific for your age and needs, let us #RevealYourBelleza today!

Live a Sweat Free, Stress Free Lifestyle with miraDry

This Year Live a Sweat Free, Stress Free Lifestyle with miraDry💦, the Only Device Available to Permanently and Dramatically Reduce Underarm Sweat and Odor

Texas summers can be scorching hot, and even though sweating is a normal part of life we don’t always want to be soaked in it. Sweating is our body’s way of naturally keeping us cool when we are in a warm environment or when we are experiencing a stressful situation.  Sometimes sweating can feel good, like when we’ve spent an hour or so in the gym and now we are covered in sweat. It makes us feel like we’ve exerted ourselves and like we have accomplished something. But that’s not necessarily always the case, and excessive sweating is caused by a condition known as hyperhidrosis. When hyperhidrosis kicks in, there’s no hiding from the embarrassing symptoms. This not only affects your life and your wardrobe but can be a blow to your self-esteem.

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a common disorder which produces a lot of sweat and a lot of unhappiness. An estimated 2%-3% of Americans suffer from excessive sweating of the underarms. [1] It can cause excessive sweating in many areas of the body including the face, underarms, body, or even your hands or feet, and the embarrassing symptoms can strike any time of day or night without warning.

miraDry💦is an FDA-cleared treatment for the symptoms of hyperhidrosis which requires no invasive surgery, and virtually no downtime. A topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area and allowed to do its work. Once it has taken effect, your miraDry💦 specialist will apply the unique hand-held applicator to your underarms which delivers deep, powerful thermal energy to target your overactive sweat glands, rendering them inactive through a process known as thermolysis. Once the glands have been destroyed, they will no longer plague you. Since your underarms only contain 2% of your body’s total sweat glands, you will not experience increased production of sweat in other areas of the body. Your body’s natural temperature control will also not be affected in any way.

You may be asking yourself, “Don’t I need the sweat glands under my arm?” The answer is not really. Every human is born with around 2 million sweat glands. Your armpits have a little less than 2% of those actual sweat glands. With the miraDry® 💦 treatment, you will be left with dry armpits, but your body is going to sweat normally everywhere else. This means that the treatment is not going to affect your body’s ability to cool itself or to get rid of excess toxins through perspiration.

The entire procedure can take a couple of hours. Before the procedure begins, your underarms are numbed, and your armpits are then exposed to electromagnetic energy that will eliminate the sweat and odor. Keep in mind that this is a PERMANENT procedure, and once the glands are removed, they don’t come back. Therefore, your excessive underarm sweating problem is gone for good. With miraDry® 💦 you can enjoy:

  • Long-lasting results
  • Safe, effective, FDA-cleared treatment
  • No downtime or pain
  • Non-invasive procedure
  • Effective to end underarm perspiration and odor
  • Increased self-confidence

The results from this procedure are immediate, and the results will last. The nice thing is that you can determine beforehand how much sweat reduction you want. By discussing this with your treatment provider ahead of time so that they can adjust the treatment to meet your exact needs. You WILL experience the results after the first treatment. However, you may need follow-up treatments to get the results desired depending on how your body reacts to the treatment process. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during treatment and are able to return to their activities immediately after the procedure is done.
