Sunscreen 101: Everything You Need To Know To Be Sun Safe This Season

We know that you know that using sunscreen is important, but did you know that you need to use it daily (even if you’re not in the sun) from head to toe.  Not only does sunscreen help prevent skin aging, but research also shows that regular daily use can reduce the risk of squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, which are two types of skin cancer. While there are some controversial topics about sunscreen- that it’s not healthy for you- concerning skin’s health and anti-aging. There are still healthy habits to develop, some myths that need to be busted and surprising places where you can (and should) apply your SPF daily to help prevent some of those nasty skincare concerns in the future.

SPF Moisturizer or Facial Sunscreen?

If you choose a SPF moisturizer, make sure it has sunscreen ingredients. There are many different formulations out there to suit almost everyone’s skin type and preferences. If you’re prone to acne, choose an oil-free product. Looking for a little bit of color then try a tinted moisturizer. No matter what, if you’re relying on moisturizer for sun protection, it should have an SPF of 15 or higher and be labeled: broad spectrum, which means it protects against UVA & UVB rays.

If you don’t use a SPF moisturizer then look for a sunscreen that’s formulated specifically for the face. These tend to be more lightweight than traditional sunscreens and are often made to go underneath cosmetics or everyday wear. After cleansing your face in the morning, apply your moisturizer or facial sunscreen.

There are a few other interesting places that you probably wouldn’t think of adding SPF, but these are just as important and crucial as the face:

  • Put Sunscreen on Your Lips: Lips are especially prone to UV damage, and since they go uncovered nearly all the time it’s important to keep them protected. Look for an SPF lip balm and pay special attention to your bottom lip—it gets the most sun exposure and is 12 times more likely to develop skin cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
  • Don’t forget your hands: Since your hands are one of the first areas to show signs of premature aging, they definitely shouldn’t go without sunscreen. After you apply the rest of your sunscreen and wash your hands, put a bit of sunscreen on the back of one hand and rub the backs of your hands together for full protection minus the slippery grip.
  • SPF your feet: You need to apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet if you want to avoid flip-flop tan lines (not to mention a painful burn) when you’re out and about in the sunny warm weather- not just at the pool or beach.

Should You Choose a Sunscreen Solely on SPF?

Instead of focusing solely on the SPF, keep an eye out for broad-spectrum sunscreens. A broad-spectrum sunscreen will ensure your skin is protected against UVA and UVB rays alike to prevent both premature aging and sunburns. Sunscreens that offer additional benefits are becoming very popular. While SPF plays a role in sun protection, it shouldn’t be the decider when determining an effective sunscreen. Selecting a sun care product isn’t as simple as picking the one with the highest SPF. SPF 30 or greater is usually sufficient, as it shields against 97% of harmful UVB rays. SPF 50 is another popular choice, but this only increases the number of rays avoided by one percent. Broad-spectrum sun protection with 22.5% zinc oxide and 22.5% titanium dioxide. It also protects against infrared radiation as well as blue light and pollution with potent antioxidants.

Are You Using Expired Sunscreen?

All sunscreen should have an expiration date. It’s usually found on the bottom of your bottle or by the barcode. But what if your product doesn’t have an expiration date on its container? First, don’t panic. This isn’t a sign your sunscreen is any less legit. The FDA requires all sunscreens to include expiration dates, unless it’s proven to last over three years. If you bought sunscreen without an expiration date, then we recommend writing the date you purchased it and open it on the container… This will provide you with a better idea of how long your sunscreen remains effective.

When you use an expired sunscreen, you’re always shortchanging your skin. In addition to being less effective, expired sunscreens may actually make your complexion more sensitive to the sun, increasing the chances of premature aging, burns and even skin cancer. Expired chemical ingredients, like octinoxate and oxybenzone, tend to oxidize while physical ingredients, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, separate or take on a gritty texture. Sunscreens are also recommended to be used within a year of opening to prevent possible exposure to bacteria. If a sunscreen starts to smell off, it’s best to discard it to avoid breakouts or other future concerns. However, if you’re practicing proper sun care habits, your sunscreen should run out long before it reaches its expiration date.

Remember, sunscreen shouldn’t be limited to when you’re in the sun, pool or beachside. Sunscreen should be worn every single day- rain or shine, men and women alike. You may not notice all the benefits now, but the advantage of using sunscreen is felt (and seen) in the long run. There is no specific time to start using sunscreen. It is always better to be late than never. Enjoy the sun 365 days with a liberal dab of sunscreen and Reveal Your Belleza

Spring Your Beauty Routine Forward With These Skin Hacks

Spring forward – Fall back. Each spring and autumn we (well most of us…we’re looking at you New Mexico and Hawaii) follow the tradition of setting our clocks ahead one hour in the spring and back one hour in the fall. The extra hour during the warmer spring and summer months gives us an extra hour of daylight, it saves energy as the nights are shorter and people don’t need to use lights until later in the evening. If you’re anything like us here at Beautique Medical Spa, you’ve also probably started the countdown to spring back in January sometime.

With Daylight Savings and the Spring Equinox right around the corner, (FYI our time change is this Sunday, March 8th and the first day of spring is March 19th) it’s a fine time to start thinking about “Springing” up your skin care routine in anticipation of the warmer weather that is yet to come and start getting Spring Skin ready. Here are a few tips on what you can do:

Don’t let old or expired cosmetic products pile up in your medicine cabinet and beauty shelves. In fact, with that extra hour this Sunday, use it to go through all your products and toss the ones that are old or expired. Throw away anything at least 6 months to a year old. Makeup brushes, too, are often overlooked, and can store unwanted germs and viruses, so now it a good time to wash them with brush cleanser or a gentle shampoo.

Expired cosmetics don’t serve your skin well and can actually cause acne, rashes, itching and other uncomfortable skin irritations. Keep what you need and toss what you don’t, and any products that are rancid or that have separated beyond their manufacturer’s suggestions should be immediately tossed and considered harmful to the skin.

Chances are that even though the calendar says spring is on the way, it might take a few days or weeks for the weather to actually catch up. Once the temperature does begin to heat up it is a good idea to revisit your facial routine and swap out certain products such as heavier serums to lighter options to better accommodate the needs of the skin during this time. Warmer months bring spontaneous trips to South Padre Island so products that serve double duty such as tinted moisturizers or multi-purpose products mean less to have to throw in your bag without compromising your skin. These little hacks can make all the difference:

  • Switch your regular cream-based cleanser with a gentle exfoliating cleanser. We recommend SENTÈ Exfoliating Cleanser is formulated with a proprietary blend of phytic acid, glycolic acid, and galactoarabinan to accomplish exfoliation of the skin with minimal irritation.
  • Follow it up with a toner/hydrating spray that can also double up as setting spray for your makeup to keep your skin clear. We offer many different options from Iredale Mineral Cosmetics. Each formulation is specifically designed to help by individual conditions.
  • Lighten up your moisturizer. Switch to lighter body and face creams that will leave your skin less sticky and hydrated at the same time. You can also use tinted moisturizers which can serve be used on your face and body. At the office we use Sentè’s Tinted moisturizer, or our Mineral makeup from Iredale Cosmetics. Come check us out to find your perfect option and we can also analyze your skin using the VISIA figure out which is the right treatment for you this spring.

You should be using sunscreen every single day (even when it’s storming and snowing outside), but if you aren’t using one regularly, spring is the time to start. With the weather warming up, this means more and more weekend brunches will be spent dining al fresco, so you got to make sure that you’re protected. Remember, if you are doing all of this work trying to get great skin but aren’t wearing sunscreen, you might as well not even try.  We absolutely love Iredale Cosmetics Powder Me SPF, so convenient and safe enough for babies to use because of its superior ingredients and convenient packaging makes this an ideal product to have in your bag of tricks.

This is the time to start purging, get rid of the old and in with the new. If you’ve been toying around with the idea of getting a chemical peel, we recommend the VI PEEL.  With five formulations available, we can transform your skin 7 days and now is definitely the time to get it! Did you know that peels aren’t just for your face?  Nope. In fact, the VI PEEL is a fantastic option for body areas such as: back, arms, chest, legs etc. A Peel now will help you reveal beautiful skin this Season.

One last Tool that you should consider having in your pocket is Hygia Multi Use Oil by Nelly du Vuyst. With its specific blend of antiseptic and bacteriostatic essential oils of lavender, thyme, rosemary, geranium and eucalyptus, this multi-use oil can be used on the face and body and is  ideal for oily or impure skin prone to acne with papules, pustules and can also be used on burns, wounds, tattoos, etc. The skin’s complexion looks clearer and healthier. Your medicine cabinet should never be without it.

Who’s ready for longer, lazier days? 🙌🏻  Us too. We are ready to help you Reveal Your Belleza as your spring forward into this new season!

The Eyes Have It: Your Answer to Brighter More Youthful Looking Eyes

Ever wish your eyes would hide your secrets a little better? Does the whole world really need to know that you pulled an all-nighter with the baby last night, or that your GNO lasted a little longer than you planned (and may have included a little more wine that intended)? The experts at Beautique Medical Spa believe that everyone has the right to be able to show off a bright, youthful, and hydrated eye area, and now everyone can thanks to our Brite EYES treatments.

Contrary to popular belief and old wives’ tales, unwanted dark circles and hollow under eyes are usually more about anatomy rather than your lifestyle choices. Phew! It’s nice to know that some of the things we don’t like to see on our faces just happen and not because of the extra wine we drank. In fact, the most common reason for the appearance of hollow dark circles is volume loss in the under-eye area, also called ‘tear troughs’. Volume loss in the tear trough area is one of the earliest signs of physiological ageing and becomes deeper and darker in appearance as one gets older.

The under-eye area may have a hollowed look due to genetics, volume loss due to aging, from environmental and health factors such as excessive sun exposure, or habits such as cigarette smoking that can affect the skin internally and externally. Hollowness can affect the whole under eye area all the way to the upper cheeks, or just the small area directly below the eyes called the tear trough. In the last few years we have seen a considerable rise in the number of women and men seeking tear trough filler treatment to revitalize their tired-looking eyes. In fact, it is one of our most requested services by our Rio Grande Valley residents. This week we are going to dive deep into why we start to lose volume, when we start to lose volume, and what we can do to help you show off your Brite Eyes with confidence.

An under eye filler treatment involves the injection of a hyaluronic acid solution under the skin below the eyes. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is found naturally in almost every cell in the body but has the greatest concentrations in the skin tissue. In fact, almost 50% of the body’s HA is found in the skin. It is found in both the deep underlying dermal areas as well as the visible epidermal top layer. As we age our skin begins to lose hyaluronic acid and hollow areas and wrinkles start developing.

So, what does hyaluronic acid have to do with giving us brighter more youthful eyes?  It is the main ingredient found in the dermal fillers we use such as Juvéderm, which provides our patients with a long-lasting, non-surgical option containing a modified form of HA making it the top choice with our injecting team. Since hyaluronic acid fillers are soft and blend into the surrounding skin, they create the most natural effect under eyes. These injections rejuvenate the skin and help it to look smoother and plumper. They fill in the hollows under the eyes and integrate with the skin to smooth it out and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and shadows. The results are visibly instant and will make your skin look more youthful. And the best part, they can last up to 2 years!

There are many different types of under eye filler injections. The following are some of the most popular options:

  • Restylane: This is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that is highly versatile and can be used under the eyes and in the cheeks and lips.
  • Belotero: This filler is similar to Restylane, but it’s easier to layer and seems to work better for addressing very fine lines.
  • PRP (platelet-rich plasma): Also known as a “vampire facelift,” this is a two-step procedure that uses your own purified blood plasma (stem cells) to heal, smooth, and regenerate the skin.
  • Juvéderm: This is the US’s most popular and administered filler that is specially manufactured to present a natural and smoother look.

We know there are a lot of products on the market, thankfully you don’t have to worry about which product to use. Leave that to the experts.

The most crucial part of any Dermal Filler journey is the consultation. A consultation can make or break your results. In fact, the consultation is SUCH an important part of our practice that we have consultations with our clients every 3-4 months to review and update their progress. We use the VISIA by Canfield to take a number of precise pictures of your face and skin to be able to get a true reading of what you need (and how far you’ve come over time).  We can see whether those dark circles and hollowness you are experiencing is because of lifestyle or genetic influences etc. Once we have a proper assessment of your skin, your injector can map out a concrete treatment plan to help you during this journey and guide you every step of the way. In our practice we choose to use the Juvéderm family of hyaluronic acids because we love that they are the gold standard in the Cosmetic Industry. Their results are consistent, predictable, and we have very little to no complications with these products. No matter which type of under eye filler you decide to use, there are lots of benefits that come with choosing fillers over other types of cosmetic treatments.

Tear trough filler is considered a safe ‘advanced’ injectable procedure, which when performed by an appropriately trained and skilled doctor in the procedure, is associated with minimal risks. Bruising and redness are common in the delicate under eye area but spontaneously resolves within a week or two. Once you get past the apprehension of having a needle placed that close to your eye, the procedure is relatively quick and painless. If you watched this week’s What You Want to Know Wednesday segment on YouTube, you’ll see how our Advanced Nurse Practitioner Stephanie explained how she uses cannulas for this treatment and what they are. All of our injectors use cannulas for these types of treatments to maximize comfort and minimize bruising. For sensitive types, “topical numbing creams can be applied to the area 30 minutes prior to the procedure to minimize discomfort. Another reason why we love Juvéderm is because it already comes with built in lidocaine which provides patience with comfort and helps save them time any money on numbing. Over the counter creams such as Arnica may also help minimize any bruising if applied after the procedure. We also provide each of our patients with very thorough Pre and Post Treatment instructions and our patients do not go home without our injectors private cell phone numbers and a follow up visit.

  • Less Recovery Time: One of the best things about fillers is the fact that there is very little downtime required after you receive them. With more invasive procedures you would need several days or weeks to recover, but with fillers you can receive the injections and get right back to your daily routine.
  • Fast Procedure: The process of receiving fillers is very efficient, and most of the time, you can be in and out in just about an hour.
  • Long Lasting Results: These results appear right away, and they also last for quite a while. Most of our patients find that their results last for six to nine months. They also find that, with subsequent filler injections, they need them even less frequently.

If you’re on the fence about under eye filler treatments, knowing what to expect from the treatment can help put you at ease. A typical under eye filler treatment with us at Beautique Medical Spa goes something like this:

  • When you arrive at Beautique, one of our Cosmetic Injectors will chat with you about the procedure and find out what you’re hoping to achieve. It’s all about expectations. This is when you will have your Perfect Complexion Analysis with the VISIA. The Injector will also want to find out about your lifestyle, cosmetic habits and find out whether or not you are currently using eye products to help strengthen that sensitive skin. In fact we have at least 5-6 different eye creams and eye treatments formulated to treat different issues for different ages. One of our favorites that work well across generations is SENTÈ Illuminè Eye Cream® which is powered by its patented Heparan Sulfate Analog (HAS) technology which improves the appearance of your skin around the eye in as early as 2 weeks. It is also clinically proven to diminish the appearance of dark circles, lines, wrinkles and puffiness around the eye area. In fact, our patients must be using an eye cream when we do these services because we need to make sure that the skin is being strengthened in order to have the best outcome possible.
  • Your Cosmetic Injector will then choose the most appropriate product or treatment for you and discuss the options and process.
  • The actual injection process includes a very fine needle or a cannula under the skin.

The whole process takes about an hour for the first treatment with consultation. If you need further treatments those are usually about 30-45 minutes. You’ll be in and out in no time at all. You can usually go back to work after receiving injections. However, we usually recommend taking the rest of the day off in order to relax and heal properly.

Under eye fillers are a great option for folks who are interested in a minimally invasive, low-risk procedure that will help to smooth out and plump up their skin. If you’re thinking about getting hyaluronic acid injections, it’s very important that you connect with the cosmetic injector and you trust them.  At Beautique we have our Medical Director and Injector that has served the McAllen Area since 1977. His newest member is Nurse Practitioner Stephanie Brown who is a an Advanced Cosmetic Injector for over 10 years as well as a Certified Allergan Cosmetic Trainer, Nurse Deenis who has been practicing Cosmetics in the Rio Grande Valley for over five years, Obed Alvarez, who is Dr. Sanchez’s right hand man and has been with our practice since day one back in 2002, and Nurse Practitioner Gio which makes our Medical Team one of the most experienced team in the Rio Grande Valley. Why do we tell you all this, because we know the importance of being part of a team and we would love the opportunity to help you reach your aesthetic goals.

How To Have The Skin You Dreams No Matter How Old You Are

“To Age” is defined on as “growing old or apparently old”. The same principle can be applied to our skin. Fact: We age…Every. Single. Day. Guess what? So does our skin. We are all born with beautiful baby soft skin. My perfect seven-week-old niece Katherine has the most amazingly soft-as-silk skin and as a person in the “industry” I can’t help but look at her and wish I could have her skin. I am also overwhelmingly overcome with the desire to shield her from the skin problems that she will encounter as she ages. Skin problems such as acne breakouts that will encounter once she reaches her teen years (and may linger into adulthood), to dullness, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation she will experience throughout the different decades of her life. Katherine’s lucky because she’s been born into a skin obsessed family. Her mama and favorite aunt happen to be skin experts and will be able to guide her in her journey by creating the perfect skin care routines to help her overcome both physiological and environmental issues as she ages.

Like Katherine, you too are lucky. You know that your skin also needs a skin care routine to help you navigate these tricky skin situations (“skinuations”), you have the expert team at Beautique Medical Spa to create your skin routines based upon what is going on in your life and your surrounding environment. Wait, did I just coin a new phrase- Skinuations. See what I did there? Clever huh? LOL. Back to what’s important. The products that saved your skin in your high school and college years won’t cut it once you hit 30. Remember Clearasil and St. Ives Apricot Scrub? Certain ingredients are more important than others, especially when your skin experiences changes as you age and you move from wrinkle prevention to wrinkle correction, you’re going to be needing a whole new approach to skin care.

This is why we’ve created Beautique Medical Spa’s Beauty thru the Ages: A Step-by-Step Guide to Getting the Skin You Dreams. Having beautiful skin is completely obtainable regardless of your age as long as you understand that the Season of Life, we are living in dictates the care of our skin. Our Guide helps you build your skin care routine based on your decade. It’s no secret that our skin changes and in addition to our environment and lifestyle, hormones play a big part on how our skin ages.

Tumultuous Twenties. So many amazing milestones happen during our twenties. We graduate college, maybe meet our soulmate, eat whatever we want and still burn off the calories, reach drinking age, spend lazy days on the sun-drenched beach. Instagram was made for the twenty-something year old. Just look at their pictures. But these are also tumultuous for a reason, stress is introduced into our lives as we start “adulting”, and those great milestones such as being able to drink and spend lazy days on the beach can have serious repercussions on our skin. Environmental skin aging is mainly responsible for aging issues during this time and the skin habits created during this decade lay the foundation for your skin’s future. Take it from us. Establish a skin routine now because your 20s can be a difficult and challenging time. Right now, your skin looks bright, bouncy and plump, but in a few decades all of that will change. The earlier you start, the better. And establishing a 4-Step skincare routine focused on cleansing, exfoliating, toning, and moisturizing now will be better for you in the long run to help you prevent wrinkles. Since you probably don’t have a lot of wrinkles right now, the focus of your skincare routine should be SPF & protection- this will be a key ingredient.

  1. Cleanse: Wash your face before bed to get the day’s grime of oil, makeup, pollution and dirt off to decrease the risk of clogged pores and acne.
  2. Acne Treatment: When it comes to your 20s, pimples will occur, and regardless of whether they happen all the time, or every once in a while, it’s always good to have a spot acne treatment on hand. Many toners and/or exfoliators treat acne. Important Tip: Don’t over treat, it can make matters worse!
  3. Moisturizer: Whether you have acne-prone skin in your 20s or not, everyone needs a moisturizer in their skin care regimen. If you have oily skin and are worried, pick a product that is oil-free. If you have acne or redness, pick one with niacinamide (Vitamin B3) which will help combat redness and help prevent early signs of aging.
  4. Sunscreen: All skin care regimen must include broad spectrum sunscreen and should be worn all year round-no matter the season! Protecting yourself from the sun decreases your risk of getting skin cancer and slows the signs of aging. Studies show that the sun’s UV radiation causes 90% of skin aging, so it’s never too early to start protecting your skin. We absolutely love Bio Organic Mineral Sunscreen by Nelly du Vuyst. It is the first translucent mineral anti-aging sun protection that provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection to prevent sunburns and offer daily protection against urban and digital pollution. Bet you didn’t think you had to use SPF to protect your face from your computer, did you?

Flirty Thirties. Who remembers the movie Thirteen Going on Thirty? Wasn’t that just the most amazing movie. I doubt there is a woman alive that couldn’t relate to the thirteen-year-old just dying to be 30. I find myself thinking of my daughter when I watch that movie and just want to tell her “Slow down honey. Your time will come waaay too soon.” As a woman who turns 45 years old tomorrow, may I give you a little advice? Enjoy your thirties. This is your time to Thrive. If you choose to have children, this is your time to be that awesome mom you were born to be, enjoy your husband, climb that corporate ladder, travel, and establish a militant self-care routine. You will find yourself pulled in so many directions, but I promise you, the BEST thing you can do for yourself is carve out Self Care time on your calendar and do NOT break those appointments. Some of the best Self Care you can do is prioritize your Skin Routine. We have tricks to help hide the effect the sleepless nights you will spend pacing back and forth as you soothe your babies to sleep will have on your skin.

30s Skin Care Routine: Now it’s time to up the anti-aging ante. For the most part you should’ve already started a basic skin care routine. (Especially the sunscreen part- seriously wear it every day!) But because you may be noticing deeper crow’s feet, more prominent frown lines, and a little less bounce as collagen production starts to slow down, it might be a good idea to add some stronger anti-aging formulations into the mix.

  • Retinol: Darling, meet your skin’s BFF…Ms. Retinol. Seriously, you two will be lifelong friends. To help maintain a strong skin foundation and stimulate collagen production, add on topical retinol. Also known as vitamin A, retinol is an anti-aging powerhouse that can reduce blemishes, boost cell regeneration and target premature signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles and more. Not all Retinols are made equally. Certain formulations can be harsh and as a result we find that many clients will stop using retinol because they didn’t like the adjustment period. Well, you know we don’t take any excuses, we hunted and tracked down one of the best retinols’ hands down. Meet the Bio Complete Serum by Sentè Labs. This serum is a lightweight nighttime formula that combines the benefits of patented HAS (Heparan Sulfate Analog) technology with sustained release retinoids and other key ingredients for the appearance of firmer and smoother skin with minimal irritation. In fact, 88% of patients show improved skin smoothness and fine lines and wrinkles in 8 weeks and 100% of patients show improved skin texture in 8 weeks. The more powerful younger sister to this product is called Intensive Bio Complete and is just a stronger percentage of retinoids. Tip: You should only use retinols and night and do NOT, I repeat do NOT use retinols if Pregnant or lactating.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: As collagen production starts to diminish, fine lines may start to become more noticeable. Keep your complexion plump and hydrated with hyaluronic acid, a humectant that helps attract moisture to skin.
  • Eye Cream: Since the first signs of age appear around the eye, now is the time to use a nourishing eye cream to ensure this thin skin gets the hydration it needs. In addition to nourishing the eye contour, eye cream can also help reduce the look of premature signs of eye aging, like fine lines, wrinkles and crow’s-feet.

Forever Fabulous. so this is my decade, and there are still days that I can’t believe “I’m in my 40s.” I won’t lie, the adjustment period was hard, but I turn 45 tomorrow and I can finally say, that I am embracing this new stage in my life happily. My daughter is now seven, and I see the amazing human she is becoming and feel so privileged to help shape her. In our forties we know who we are, and don’t have to change to fit in any longer. And, I even get asked by younger women to share my wisdom with them, and that can be fun at times. Like the good habits that we have established regarding our careers, parenting, and being a partner to our spouses, the good skin care habits we established earlier are being rewarded. Now, if you didn’t treat your skin very kindly during your youth, don’t stress, there is still time to reverse some of the damage that has been caused and help you look Forever Fabulous going forward.

40s Skin Care Routine: By this point you should be maintaining the good habits you’ve already set—a solid skincare routine, SPF every day, and healthy lifestyle choices like not smoking and drinking plenty of water—now is the time to pay closer attention to the quality of your sleep. By your 40s, your skin turnover rate has slowed to more than double that of your early 20s (45 days vs. 20 days on average).
Your healing from scrapes and hormonal acne takes much longer, and you’ve had plenty of time in the sun and pollution to damage your skin’s DNA, increasing our risk of cancer and breaking down of our skin’s collagen faster than you can replace it. Wrinkles appear in areas of the face with the most movement, such as the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes and mouth. Now it’s time to take your skincare level up a whole few notches. We also suggest investing in a few products that will make catching those Zz’s a little more blissful, such as cooling bed sheets, a good white noise machine, lavender essential oil sprinkled on your sheets, and silk pillowcases (the gentle fabric won’t tug and pull while you snooze, contributing to fewer wrinkles).

  • Antioxidant Serum: As you start to age, you’ll notice that your body takes a bit longer to recuperate. As your skin’s natural antioxidant defenses start to slow down, the skin cannot protect itself as well as it once could from the environment. It can start to take longer for the skin cells to replace themselves and correct the daily damage done to it, which is why in addition to protecting your skin with sunscreen and moisturizer, it’s time to add in the power of antioxidants as another layer of protection. Two antioxidants to keep on your radar. Vitamins C and E. Multiple studies show that antioxidant serums with vitamins C and E can protect your skin against photo-aging and lighten pigment. These vitamins function as antioxidants, neutralizing the damaging free radicals created by the sun and pollution before they activate the breakdown of collagen
  • Anti-aging Face Cream: No matter your age, face cream is always a must. However, for your 40s you should use a more focused moisturizer that helps target signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots and more. One of our favorites is Cellular-Matrix Cream by Nelly du Vuyst. This cream is specifically formulated to restore youthful and revitalized look to your skin. Made with salmon DNA and borage seed oil which is known for their repairing, nourishing and regenerating properties, this ultra-light and velvety formula helps prevent and minimize the appearance of aging signs such as wrinkles and fine lines.

Phenomenal 50s AND BEYOND. With each decade you start to experience a significant change in your skin and beauty—and for women over 50 and 60, and beyond these changes can become more challenging. Lines and wrinkles become more noticeable as your skin becomes drier, thinner and more sensitive. Resulting in thinner, looser skin as it begins to lose collagen and elastin. At this point in your skin care journey, the focus should be in maintaining your skin health, and making sure your skin has everything it needs to protect and defend itself against further damage.

  • Peptides: In your 50s, and beyond you want to boost skin selectivity as much as you can. You should look for specialized ingredients like growth factors and peptides, which act like messengers to stimulate activity of your skin cells. When you apply topical peptides, they minimize wrinkles and give your skin a more youthful appearance. Peptides can be more effective in stimulating corrective pathways in the skin that have slowed with age.
  • Rich Face Cream: Women in their 50s should use products that hydrate the skin. As you age, the skin continues to thin, making it dry, more sensitive and easily damaged. Look for products made with oils like jojoba or castor seed in their protective and emollient qualities, and humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid that can pull water back to your skin. The thicker, the better.
  • Eyelash & Brow Conditioner: Another must-try product for your 50s? Eyelash and brow conditioner. As we age, “hair growth—including, eyelashes and eyebrows—begins to slow down. So, adding a specific product that can help with this repercussion can promote longer, fuller, more youthful-looking eyelashes and brows. We love Revitalash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner & Serum to help grow longer lashes. This original one-of-a-kind, Ophthalmologist developed eyelash conditioner enhances the look of lashes and protects against breakage while improving health, flexibility and strength for lashes that thrive naturally. And for brows we highly recommend Revitalash Advanced Eyebrow Conditioner & Serum. This conditioner addresses the visible signs of eyebrow aging due to chemical and environmental stressors, over-plucking and styling products, which lead to healthier looking, more luxurious brows.

Taking care of your skin is important- no matter what the age. It’s a simple and easy way to help you maintain youth and prevent wrinkles and loss of elasticity from developing so quickly. Of course, other factors take place as well such as: stress, lack of sleep, not enough water and unhealthy eating habits are factors as well. All of the products mentioned above are available at Beautique Medical Spa and our team of experts is always ready to help you customize your skincare routine specific for your age and needs, let us #RevealYourBelleza today!

This Year Live a Sweat Free, Stress Free Lifestyle with miraDry💦, the Only Device Available to Permanently and Dramatically Reduce Underarm Sweat and Odor

Texas summers can be scorching hot, and even though sweating is a normal part of life we don’t always want to be soaked in it. Sweating is our body’s way of naturally keeping us cool when we are in a warm environment or when we are experiencing a stressful situation.  Sometimes sweating can feel good, like when we’ve spent an hour or so in the gym and now we are covered in sweat. It makes us feel like we’ve exerted ourselves and like we have accomplished something. But that’s not necessarily always the case, and excessive sweating is caused by a condition known as hyperhidrosis. When hyperhidrosis kicks in, there’s no hiding from the embarrassing symptoms. This not only affects your life and your wardrobe but can be a blow to your self-esteem.

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a common disorder which produces a lot of sweat and a lot of unhappiness. An estimated 2%-3% of Americans suffer from excessive sweating of the underarms. [1] It can cause excessive sweating in many areas of the body including the face, underarms, body, or even your hands or feet, and the embarrassing symptoms can strike any time of day or night without warning.

miraDry💦is an FDA-cleared treatment for the symptoms of hyperhidrosis which requires no invasive surgery, and virtually no downtime. A topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area and allowed to do its work. Once it has taken effect, your miraDry💦 specialist will apply the unique hand-held applicator to your underarms which delivers deep, powerful thermal energy to target your overactive sweat glands, rendering them inactive through a process known as thermolysis. Once the glands have been destroyed, they will no longer plague you. Since your underarms only contain 2% of your body’s total sweat glands, you will not experience increased production of sweat in other areas of the body. Your body’s natural temperature control will also not be affected in any way.

You may be asking yourself, “Don’t I need the sweat glands under my arm?” The answer is not really. Every human is born with around 2 million sweat glands. Your armpits have a little less than 2% of those actual sweat glands. With the miraDry® 💦 treatment, you will be left with dry armpits, but your body is going to sweat normally everywhere else. This means that the treatment is not going to affect your body’s ability to cool itself or to get rid of excess toxins through perspiration.

The entire procedure can take a couple of hours. Before the procedure begins, your underarms are numbed, and your armpits are then exposed to electromagnetic energy that will eliminate the sweat and odor. Keep in mind that this is a PERMANENT procedure, and once the glands are removed, they don’t come back. Therefore, your excessive underarm sweating problem is gone for good. With miraDry® 💦 you can enjoy:

  • Long-lasting results
  • Safe, effective, FDA-cleared treatment
  • No downtime or pain
  • Non-invasive procedure
  • Effective to end underarm perspiration and odor
  • Increased self-confidence

The results from this procedure are immediate, and the results will last. The nice thing is that you can determine beforehand how much sweat reduction you want. By discussing this with your treatment provider ahead of time so that they can adjust the treatment to meet your exact needs. You WILL experience the results after the first treatment. However, you may need follow-up treatments to get the results desired depending on how your body reacts to the treatment process. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during treatment and are able to return to their activities immediately after the procedure is done.

Thanks to Dr. Sanchez and Beautique Medical Spa there’s no reason for you to experience another sticky Rio Grande Valley summer or live your life in fear that you’re going to sweat through your favorite shirt or dress at the least opportune time. miraDry💦 is a safe, effective treatment for hyperhidrosis that can help you regain control of your life. Case Closed: The #1 Cause of Looking Older

It’s no secret that we all want to look younger. We live in a youth obsessed society, but this is nothing new. Since the beginning of time, civilization has been on some sort of quest to find eternal youth.  We’re a bit more sophisticated these days, we know that there is NO actual Fountain of Youth we can drink from, sorry Ponce De Leon. I guess you could say that our Modern-Day Fountain of Youth would be the mighty Medical Spa; also called medi-spas or med spas, these types or practices are a sort of hybrid between the traditional day spa and a medical clinic and tend to specialize in anti-aging services.  Medical spas typically combine the best of two worlds—a relaxing spa experience with the procedures and expertise typically only found at a doctor’s office.

At Beautique Medical Spa our most popular services are Botox and Fillers, such as Juvéderm and Voluma. Beautique Medical Spa is considered an expert in this field; in fact, Dr. Sanchez, the Owner and Medical Director, is the only Diamond Practice recognized by Allergan in the Rio Grande Valley. So it’s safe to say we inject A LOT of Botox and Filler.  When clients come to us to help reverse the signs of aging and/or start their journey toward achieving a smoother, younger-looking complexion, most clients ask for Botox right off the bat. While Botox does smooth wrinkles and make you look years younger, dermal fillers correct issues Botox simply can’t. They work together hand in hand.

If you’re a newbie when it comes to dermal fillers it is helpful to know what they are and what they’re used for. Here at Beautique Medical Spa, we offer a variety of dermal fillers, each with a distinctive formulation. Each filler has its job on where and when it should be applied and of course the correct amount needed to achieve your best transformation. We really like Allergan’s family of dermal fillers because they include lidocaine which helps the process be the least painful possible, their outcome is predictable and well tolerated by the majority of clients.  We also carry Radiesse and love that product to help re-build volume and help restore youth to hands.  Other products on the market that are popular are from the makers of Restylane.

What Do I Need to Know About Dermal Fillers?

As we age, we lose facial volume, as well as the ability to produce natural collagen and elastin, which is what helps provide lift and padding under our epidermis. The skin also tends to become more dehydrated, thinner and loses a bit of its youthful component. To correct, cosmetic Injectors use dermal fillers to provide lift, and smooth deep wrinkles and folds by restoring this lost volume to the face for a fresher more youthful look.  Dermal fillers are small injections of hyaluronic acid, also known as HA, (we call it a secret anti-aging weapon) to fill in wrinkles and add volume to soft tissue. We typically apply this to the face, around the eyes, cheeks, mouth/lips, and jawline. Using Dermal Fillers to lift and smooth targeted folds and wrinkles by adding subtle volume, can make a huge difference to a person’s appearance, giving them a fresher look. Fillers can make you look younger because they don’t change your appearance dramatically like you would with a face lift or other plastic surgery option. People notice you look amazing, but most of the time won’t know what you’ve done…and boy will it will drive them crazy. LOL. All your friends will see is a more confident, vibrant version of yourself.

How Do I Know Which Filler is Used Where?

You shouldn’t have to. As mentioned earlier, we primarily use Allergan’s family of Fillers which include: Juvéderm Ultra and Ultra Plus, Volbella, Vollure, and Voluma. Each product is used to achieve specific results in different areas of the face such as to treat fine lines on the more delicate parts of the face to filling in deep folds and wrinkles and building up the cheeks. The beauty about fillers is that they can be used alone or in combination with each other. It is our job as expert injectors to help navigate you during this journey.

Which Filler is best for Lips?

Whether you were born with thinner lips, or have lost lip volume due to hormones or smoking, to give your lips a little extra oomph we use Juvéderm Ultra XC an injectable gel that temporarily adds more fullness and plumps thin lips—whether your lips have thinned over time or you simply want fuller lips—in adults over the age of 21. Thanks to the lidocaine that is already part of the formulation, Juvéderm Ultra treatments are usually relatively painless and quick. Juvéderm Ultra is ideal for anyone wanting to add more shape and volume to their lips for that perfect pout. Results for Lips last typically last anywhere from 6-12 months depending on the person. Another product that we use for lips is JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC an injectable gel primarily used in the to increase lip fullness and soften the appearance of lines around the mouth often called “lipstick lines” in adults over the age of 21. You can kiss away “lipstick bleed” with Volbella and have a   beautifully smooth lip border. Since Volbella contains the thinnest, most spreadable gel, it is also used to fill in acne scarring on the face, and even smooth out the delicate under eye area. Volbella usually lasts up to 12 months

Which filler is best for cheeks?

As we age, the cheeks may flatten, and the skin may begin to sag. As Dr. Sanchez explains to his clients, this is caused by natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. To restore volume to the cheeks Dr. Sanchez and his team use JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC to add volume beneath the skin’s surface, which provides lift and contour to the cheek area.

VOLUMA: is what we like to call the “mother of all fillers”. This product is used for mid face to help lift. The thickest and strongest gel of the Juvéderm family, Voluma is ideal for deeper injections into the cheeks. It gives your face a nice lift and boost of supple volume. If you’re looking for a natural contour and a defined, youthful look, Voluma is for you. No downtime is needed after the injection and it can last up to two years.

Another option your injector may use is Juvéderm Ultra Plus. It’s used to FILL, and most commonly used on your cheeks or the area around your mouth (smile lines). It’s a thicker version of the Juvéderm Ultra and is used to fill in depressed areas in the cheeks and correct deeper facial wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines. Ultra Plus is ideal for those looking to smooth deep folds and wrinkles or plump areas with deep skin depression or fat loss. Results usually last up to 12 months

Which filler is best for lines such as Smile/Laugh Lines also called Nasolabial Folds and frown lines?

After a thorough facial analysis, your injector will most likely recommend one or both of the following products to combat lines that have appeared due to aging and volume loss. JUVÉDERM® XC Ultra & Ultra Plus. First approved by the FDA in 2006, it corrects moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the parentheses lines or “smile lines” around the nose and mouth. It is injected into areas of facial tissue where moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds occur to temporarily add volume to the skin, which may give the appearance of a smoother surface. Typical results last up to 12 months.

Also commonly used for lines either alone or in combination with Ultra/Ultra Plus is JUVÉDERM VOLLURE XC which is injected into the areas of facial tissue where moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds occur, including the “parentheses lines” around the nose and mouth. JUVÉDERM VOLLURE XC is designed to temporarily correct facial wrinkles for a smoother appearance to the face for adults over the age of 21. Used more for balance with those that create more of a shadowed look and combines a perfect mix of spread ability and durability allowing for more natural facial expressions and movements after injection. It’s ideal for treating nasolabial folds and marionette lines as well as filling in moderate wrinkles and refreshing the lower part of the face. The treatment can last up to 18 months and has been found to be the longest-lasting dermal filler for nasolabial folds.

Which Filler is Best for the Under-Eye Area, Tear Troughs, Temples, Nose etc.?

It is important to know that the FDA has only approved the Juvéderm collection of Dermal Fillers to be used for cheeks, lines, and lips but in the hands of a skilled injector other areas such as the tear troughs, temple, and nose are treated “off-label” which basically means that those areas haven’t been through clinical trials and aren’t technically approved by the FDA, but like mentioned, skilled injectors that have gone through hours of extensive training can be qualified to perform these non-surgical procedures.

How Many Syringes Do I Really Need?

ketchp.jpegOne of the most important things to know about fillers is that one syringe of filler is usually not enough in most cases to provide full correction and results you’d be pleased with. Close your eyes and picture a packet of ketchup.  How many little packets do your typically use for your French fries or hamburger? Only one? Didn’t think so, more like 3-5 am I right? Well each ketchup packet is equivalent to 5 syringes of a dermal filler. Isn’t that crazy? That is why when your injector suggests more than one syringe, it’s because you really need it. Think about it, you are already spending money on yourself, why would you only do half a treatment? Do you really think 1/5 of a ketchup packet is enough to fill in the two lines next to your mouth, or your lips? There is a rule of thumb that can be followed, one syringe per decade. So, if you’re 30 you will most likely need a minimum of three syringes, 40 would need four syringes and so on.  You can calculate two syringes for cheeks and nasolabial folds (one for each side). Usually one syringe to add fullness to the lips and if necessary one for the border to stop the lipstick bleeding. Does that make more sense?  Next time you go to a McDonald’s grab a ketchup packet and imagine that much filler in your lips and/or cheek, it’s not a lot is it?

There are a variety of fillers and we here at Beautique carry a few different kinds such as: Vollure, Volbella, Juvéderm Ultra, Juvéderm Ultra Plus and Voluma. Each one of these fillers has a special job.

What Results Do Fillers Provide?

The results should be subtle, leaving your friends and family believing that you’re simply looking your best and great for your age. Treatment can last between 9-24 months, but naturally towards the end of this period the effects begin to gradually soften, so there really is no dramatic change. When the effects begin to soften, then it’s time ‘top up’ the treatment.

Whether you’re suffering from a lack of collagen production, acne, or other effects of the aging process, dermal fillers can give you a more natural appearance than surgical face lifts. They are used to reduce or eliminate wrinkles, fill in scars left over from acne, enhance lips, and replace soft-tissue volume loss.

Of course, always keep in mind that when you come in for your consultation and talk with your injector then you will be properly advised on which filler would be the best fit for you.

When you visit Beautique Medical Spa, you are always in the care of properly licensed & certified professionals. That’s the kind of artist you want to make you look younger, refreshed and revealing your Belleza!  Beautiful skin starts with a conversation. What Your Skin Says About Your Health

We were born with perfect baby-soft skin and as we have grown up, that’s still the skin we have, but it’s not so “baby-soft” anymore. Truth is, we’ve only got this one skin and it’s up to us how it’s cared for. It is said that the eyes are the “window to your soul”, well, we have a twist on that saying, “Your skin is a reflection of your body’s health”. You see, our skin reveals the various health stages of our lives.  In our pre-teen years, our skin showed the effects of puberty via acne breakouts which often lasted thru to our teenager years and even beyond. For those of us who became mothers we got to experience the miracle known as “Pregnancy Glow” and at some point, regardless of age we have ALL had some pigmentary imperfection caused from being out in the sun too much. It is a well-known fact that one’s age is reflected in your skin, and your skin’s health is an overall reflection of your body’s health, which leads us to promoting the practice of self-care. We say Self-Care is one of the best types healthcare you can practice. That’s because the saying, “you are what you eat” applies to your skin’s appearance too, not just your body. The healthier you are, the healthier your skin will look.

The skin is the body’s largest organ and when in a healthy state, its layers work hard to protect us. But when it’s compromised, the skin’s ability to work as an effective barrier is impaired. Your skin, is an incredible living and dynamic organ, influenced by your lifestyle, your environment and the way you care for it. External factors such as stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, not enough exercise, unhealthy eating habits and even smoking can affect the overall quality of your skin. For those looking to up their skin health, here are Five Easy Steps you can practice immediately to improve your lifestyle and overall health (including your skin) in the process.

  1. EAT A BALANCED & HEALTHY DIET: We get it, this is not a revolutionary tip, but it is the foundation to clear, healthy skin. And sometimes we just need to hear things a few times to remind us of what we need to do. When it comes to food it’s really all about moderation. So, the fries topped with plenty of cheese that you ate over the weekend with friends, as long as it’s not a nightly occurrence by practicing moderation, you should be okay. Then there’s the superfood salad you ate for lunch yesterday, now that’s a great choice, but we know that one can’t live by salad alone, which is why it’s a good idea to make eating an enjoyable experience that fills the senses so that moderation is easy to practice. Regardless of how good or bad it is for you, you probably enjoyed both. However, your skin on the other hand- not so much. What you eat is as important as the products that you put on your skin. Your diet could improve your skin health from the inside out, so a clear complexion begins with eating a healthy diet. Foods that are high in refined sugar, artificial additives, and those containing certain unhealthy fats may reflect on your skin as well. Eat healthy foods like vegetables, berries and nuts and seeds which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids to keep your skin looking healthy and fresh. Always, always, always drink plenty of water! Drinking water keeps your body hydrated and helps to support your detoxification organs, including your skin. It also keeps your skin well moisturized, which preserves your skin’s elasticity and healthy glow.
  2. KEEP YOUR STRESS IN CHECK: Did you know that stress has been linked to acne breakouts and various skin conditions such as eczema? Those who experience high stress levels are more likely to see its damaging results in their skin because stressed skin is more susceptible to breakout, dull patches and dehydration. Try reducing stress by managing your time to include mind and body exercises such as: prayer/meditation and Pilates. Exercising produces happy hormones, including serotonin, that help reduce stress levels, and encourage your skin to look more glowing and fresher. Another way stress can affect your skin is by causing inflammation, which in turn causes your skin to freak out. If you’re predisposed to eczema for example then feeling overwhelmed with stress is one trigger that can make its characteristic patches of dry, itchy, inflamed skin bloom across your body. This doesn’t mean stress will cause these conditions if you don’t have them, just that it might make them harder to manage if you do. So here is a super simple tip, inhale 1-2-3 and then exhale 1-2-3. Trust us your skin will love you for it.
  3. LOCK IN THE MOISTURE: Moisturizing your skin is one sure way to help it maintain its youthfulness and protecting your skin’s moisture barrier is most important. Skin moisturizers keep the top layer of your skin cells hydrated and help seal in moisture. Most moisturizers contain humectants to attract moisture to the skin and retain that moisture, causing your skin cells to feel nice and smooth. You should have a personalized skin care routine that works best for you and your skin. We recommend products to be as naturally sourced as possible without sacrificing the overall performance of your skin, and that are designed to optimize your body’s own dynamic skin mechanisms of self-rejuvenation. We LOVE Sente Dermal Repair Cream. Formulated with HSA technology, Dermal Repair Cream, a super hydrator diminishes the appearance of wrinkles, while improving skin tone and texture. With continuous use, it is clinically shown to improve the overall appearance of the skin. This unique formulation is appropriate for compromised and sensitive skin. In addition to using a morning and a nighttime moisturizer. It is important to have a morning and nighttime moisturizer because they are not the same.  During the night while sleeping, our skin is in its most regenerative phase and allows us to tolerate anti-aging ingredients such as retinols at night resulting in smoother, wrinkle-free skin. Use a gentle cleanser on your face and avoid over cleansing so that you don’t strip your skin.Always apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to all exposed skin every morning and throughout the day as needed. Have a range of skin care options on hand to address skin changes that arise due to the environment, aging and/or your lifestyle. Your skincare expert can help you create a skincare plan that will give you the results without wasting money.
  4. Smoke? QUIT NOW! Smoking is known to cause damage to not only your skin, but also your entire body. It ages your skin, causing the blood vessels found in the outer layer of the skin to reduce blood flow and exhaust the skin its nutrients and oxygen it needs to remain healthy. Smoking can reduce the natural elasticity of the skin by causing the breakdown of collagen and reduction of collagen production, which is a process associated with the signs of premature aging. Furthermore, the repetitive expressions that are made when smoking- such as pursing the lips- can contribute to wrinkles on the face.
  5. GET PLENTY OF BEAUTY SLEEP: Getting enough sleep is probably one of the most obvious signs of a healthy lifestyle. Not only will getting your beauty sleep will banish those dark circles around your eyes and improve your skin tone, and, best of all, it is free! Lack of sleep can lead to many different causes of an unhealthy lifestyle but can also have a significant impact on the skin’s function and aging. Sleeping 7-8 hours a day is recommended for the body to function efficiently and optimize the secretion of human growth hormones, which promotes collagen production. During deep sleep, your body enters repair mode and regenerates the skin, muscles, blood, and brain cells and without adequate sleep, your body is unable to produce any new collagen.

At the end of the day you can truly only control your lifestyle according to best fit your needs. However, rituals are valuable to good health and one of the first things you probably do when you wake up each morning and evening is to care for your skin. Your daily skin care rituals are not only opportunities to address the appearance of your skin, but also time to focus on your skin’s health, and in turn, your overall health. Taking these moments for skin care is just one way to truly practice self-care. Having a healthy lifestyle will reflect on your skin’s appearance, and by making a few changes in your lifestyle, you can encourage more youthful and glowing skin.

Do I Need Microdermabrasion?

We’ve all heard of it before, but do you know exactly what microdermabrasion is and if you really “need” it? Microdermabrasion, as we know it, has been around since the mid-nineties, but if you want to get technical, you could say it’s been in practice since 1500BC if we count the Ancient Egyptian’s exfoliation method. They used something resembling sandpaper (OUCH!); so in terms of clinical treatments, microdermabrasion (facial exfoliation) is old technology. However, its promises of soft, glowing skin, diminished acne scarring, minimized pores, reduced fine line, and reversed brown spots have kept us addicted to this type of exfoliation, even after all these years.

If your skin is starting to appear dull, lifeless, or even older than you’d like? That’s because it takes about 25-30 days for your skin cells to shed. Unless you practice regular exfoliation, you may start to notice that your skin starts to feel uneven in texture, and not as vibrant as it could be. This is why we love microdermabrasion because it provides an instant boost to our skin by sloughing off the dead skin cells that are just lying at the surface (epidermal layer) of your skin. This is true for face and body. Exfoliating, particularly with microdermabrasion, reveals new and healthier skin safely without serious side effects. The only side effects that could potentially occur are operational. If your therapist is not highly experienced working with the handpieces they can cause a little bit of temporary scratches, if they aren’t precise, you may not have evenly exfoliated skin, and if you have a lot of active acne breakouts and the therapist goes over them with the handpiece, they run the risk of spreading the bacteria to other parts of the face and could potentially contaminate other clients IF they don’t know what they’re doing. Lucky for you, our therapists are experts when it comes to Microdermabrasion. In fact, we offer two types of microdermabrasion both of which can be used on the whole body.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic treatment that involves physically exfoliating your skin to improve tone and texture. During the facial treatment, your therapist will thoroughly cleanse and analyze your skin. If you’re a candidate she may prep your skin with a little glycolic or lactic acid to help loosen the dead skin cells even more. After those initial steps it is time for microdermabrasion. There are two types of microdermabrasion, crystal and crystal-free. The original method uses tiny crystals to help remove the superficial layer of dead skin cells. The handpiece buffs and polishes the skin by using a stream of fine crystals to exfoliate the skin while the vacuum loosens dead skin cells from the face.

The other most common method such as the Diamond Glow uses a diamond tip to exfoliate the skin, the vacuum clears up the pores freeing them from dirt and debris that accumulates in pores over time, and simultaneously infuses the skin with skin specific serums packed with antioxidants providing brighter, younger, more glowing looking skin.

How Do I Know if Microdermabrasion Is Right for Me?

As mentioned, Microdermabrasion is a procedure that removes the upper layers of skin known as the stratum corneum. The really cool thing is that this physical exfoliation promotes new collagen production, smooths out the skin and helps reverse the signs of aging by minimizing scars and smoothing out fine lines. The crystals, or serums, are gently worked into your skin by a handheld device. You can remove dead skin from your face, neck, and back without damaging the fresh, healthy skin below.

EVERYONE can benefit from regular microdermabrasion treatments, unless of course you have dermatitis, Rosacea or active acne lesions. Like we talked about earlier, most issues that can occur with microdermabrasion are caused by the therapist and lack of proper consulting. Because the Rio Grande Valley provides strong sunshine basically year-round it is important to adopt a skincare routine (especially the regular use of spf) before and after your treatment to attain the best results. So, before you consider this service, you want to make sure that you talk to your skin expert about making sure that you are on a skin care regimen to help enhance your results. If you live here in the McAllen area, our experts here at Beautique Medical Spa can help customize your perfect skincare program to meet give you the results you want.

What’s the Difference Between Dermabrasion & Microdermabrasion?
  • Derm = skin
  • Abrasion = scraping or wearing away
  • Micro = very small

In short, both are facial treatments that improve skin’s tone and texture by scraping away a layer (or multiple layers) of skin—with microdermabrasion being a less invasive treatment. Dermabrasion is a medical procedure used to smooth out the skin by reducing the appearance of scars, fine wrinkles and even pre-cancerous growth. It’s considered a form of cosmetic surgery and can only be performed by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist. Ideally, the skin is numbed with general anesthesia, and during the procedure the doctor scrapes away at the skin, removing layer by layer until reaching the safest level that will make the scar or wrinkle less visible. After the procedure, you should see dramatic improvements in your skin’s texture and tone; however, the complete regeneration and re-pigmentation of skin can take up to six or twelve months.

While there are specific situations where the more invasive dermabrasion is necessary, we love microdermabrasion because it is painless and can take an hour or less. After just your first microdermabrasion treatment, you can expect to see brighter, more vibrant skin. It can improve your skin’s texture, tone, treat discoloration, sun damage, light scarring and even stretch marks. Unlike dermabrasion, you won’t need to be under anesthesia and should only feel a sensation similar to a mild scratching or vibration. The best part- no downtime or recovery following any treatment.

How Does Microdermabrasion Feel?

When you get your microdermabrasion, you will most like feel like you’re getting mild scratching on the skin, or like an intense facial scrub. The treatment is comfortable with a satisfying sensation of feeling your pores vacuumed clean, buffed and polished leaving your skin feeling squeaky clean, and positively glowing.
As with any treatment, microdermabrasion works best when you commit to a series of treatments (we recommend them monthly) so that you can see and feel the change you’re looking for in your skin. A series of these treatments will improve your skin’s cell turnover, revealing brighter-looking skin and a smoother surface.
Of course, if you have pigmentation, scarring or other skin conditions, more treatments could be necessary, but microdermabrasion encourages the skin cycle of exfoliating dead skin cells and stimulating collagen to allow new skin to grow.

Protecting your skin is our most important concern. You want to keep in mind that your skin needs to stay hydrated without overdoing it. It is important to let your skin exfoliate so we suggest you avoid using heavy moisturizers for a few hours after the microdermabrasion and instead use serums and a light sunscreen. So, are you ready to show off beautiful glowing skin, consider scheduling a microdermabrasion treatment and enjoy your beautiful skin? Call us at (956) 664-1234 to reserve your consultation today.

6 Weeks To A New You!

Congratulations! We’re a full 14 days into 2020, and you most likely fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Made Resolutions and have already broke them
  2. Refuse to Make Resolutions at all
  3. Made them and are Keeping them like a #BossBabe

If you belong to group number 3 kudos to you for sticking it out this long and here’s to sticking it out for the long-haul. We’re cheering you on!

According to here were of the Top 10 Resolutions in 2019. These results were gathered from surveying a group of 2,000 people:

  1. Diet or eat healthier (71 percent)
  2. Exercise more (65 percent)
  3. Lose weight (54 percent)
  4. Save more and spend less (32 percent)
  5. Learn a new skill or hobby (26 percent)
  6. Quit smoking (21 percent)
  7. Read more (17 percent)
  8. Find another job (16 percent)
  9. Drink less alcohol (15 percent)
  10. Spend more time with family and friends (13 percent)

No need to raise your hand, but if you are the type of person that makes resolutions (even if only in your head) which of these 10 made your cut? Now please know, we are not trying to sound discouraging in any way, but it’s a known fact that most people jump in head first when trying to make a drastic change in their life to only feel pressure, insecurities and defeat within the first few weeks of their new journey. Sadly, over 80% of people drop their resolutions two weeks into the year.  But remember, we are NOT Negative Nelly’s. We’re here to help…we are your personal cheerleaders.

The reality is: IT’S MIND OVER MATTER. As cliché as it sounds, there’s more psychological preparation needed to really give yourself time to be a better you. You have to want it and desire it for YOURSELF. Not as a condition to show love for yourself, but as a way to enhance your best traits and qualities that you already know rock! Self-love or self-acceptance is not simply a state of feeling good, but is a state of appreciation, of acceptance for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth. Once you make the heart decision, everything else comes naturally and easily.

It is not coincidence that the #1 Resolution year over year, since the beginning of time is to lose weight and become healthier. Whether you need to shed the Holiday pounds, or really buckle down and get rid of significant weight for your health, weight loss has usually been an uphill battle since forever. However, the key to a lot of weight loss programs out there, (ours included) is MIND OVER MATTER… you have to feel motivated and be consistent in order to achieve your desired goal. So many times, you hear people say, “Once I feel more confident and better about myself, I’ll be motivated to do it all, or once things slowdown in my life I can really focus on myself.” However, before you know it another year has passed, and you find yourself stuck in the same place as before making the same promises to yourself and not following through. And yes, we agree 100%. You do have to be in the right frame of mind.  Each of us has to be in the right frame of mind whenever we are trying to start a new habit or introduce a change in our life. But we don’t believe that you need to do it alone.  This is definitely an “It takes a village” phase in life.

Our team at Beautique Medical Spa want to help make your self-acceptance easy and attainable. We want to be a part of your journey as you work towards becoming Your Best Version. We want this time to be easy, exciting and as stress-free as possible. We know that losing weight is difficult, but we know that sticking to a plan is even harder, which is why we offer two proven solutions that will help you shed away excess weight for a more healthier and energetic you in just 6 weeks, but the main difference is that you have a complete method and a team with you every step of the way!

The first option is our HCG program, which can help you drop 26-30lbs in about 6 weeks. Dr. Sanchez has developed this proprietary program to help in weight loss utilizing various options available on the market today. What is HcG? In existence since the 1950’s, the HCG program is a very low-fat, very low-calorie diet and is built around incorporating HCG, a hormone produced in early pregnancy. The HCG diet uses a combination of HCG and extremely low-calorie intake to achieve dramatic weight loss. It is generally divided into phases:

  1. Loading phase: start taking HCG and eat plenty of high-fat, high-calorie foods for two days.
  2. Weight loss phase: continue taking HCG and eat only 500 calories per day for 3–6 weeks.
  3. Maintenance phase: Stop taking HCG. Gradually increase food intake but avoid sugar and starch for three weeks.

Sound intense?  It can be. And for many clients, it has saved their lives by basically resetting their metabolism, helping them lower their cholesterol, risk for diabetes, in some cases even reverse Type 2 Diabetes.  Is the HCG diet for everyone?  No, it’s not. I know what you’re going to say…. almost every doctor in the Rio Grande Valley offers the HCG diet, what makes your diet different?  Well, for once the way we have created this program is completely different. You will have to come in and speak to one of our medical professionals first to see if you even qualify for the program.  We will not allow any client to be on this program until they have an extensive series of lab tests, an EKG,  along with a comprehensive medical history and examination to see if a client is a good candidate for this program. While the HCG diet isn’t for everyone, our proprietary program has helped over 1,500 RGV residents shed over 30,000lbs of weight and regain a healthy lifestyle. That’s a whole lot of weight…about the same as 3 Full Grown African Elephants or 180 full grown women!

Shifting gears, wouldn’t it be nice if there was a magic pill that would let us burn 9600 calories and permanently eliminate over 1.6 liters of fat in 32 minutes?  Well, we don’t have a magic pill, but we do have UltraSlim and that is the next best thing. Dr. Sanchez is always researching to see what services and technology exist in today’s market that actually work that would make a difference in his clients’ lives. UltraSlim is a state-of-the-art technology, and the only non-invasive FDA Cleared device for immediate fat loss without dieting, exercise, drugs, or surgery. In contrast to other popular services available such as the Venus Freeze and CoolSculpting, clients permanently lose fat quickly with the special light frequency that UltraSlim uses which stimulates and shrinks fat cells. The way it works is the treated fat cells respond by opening temporary pores in the cell and emptying the fat cell contents, releasing all of that stubborn fat you just can’t seem to get rid of, without dieting or exercise. The best part is that over the next 72 hours the cells are still excited and stimulated and are STILL losing fat. All of that released fat is then passed out your body through urine and stool.

The biggest differences between all these popular non-surgical fat loss treatments are safety and cost. UltraSlim is 100% safe because it does not damage the cell in any shape, way or form as it permanently eliminates the fat. This means our clients will not experience the dimpling or bumpiness that many clients experience after the other types of services promising similar results. The second biggest difference is cost. UltraSlim is way more affordable than any other service on the market. And our no-nonsense policy will ensure that if you are not a good candidate (which is very rare) we give you your money back! (details are discussed during the initial consultation) This is a great way to jump-start your “get my body back” plan, lose a few inches for an event, or combine with HCG for maximum weight loss. Please note that UltraSlim is not a weight loss device, but rather a fat and inch loss option.

So, if you are one of the over 70% of people that feel that the start of a new year means taking steps to be healthier, here are Five Key Tips to adopt when starting any weight loss or get healthy program:

  1. Become Mindful: Know that this is the time for you to start something new for YOU. Be mindful of who you are and act on this knowledge when it comes to a weight loss program for yourself.
  2. Act on what you need rather than what you want: When you can turn to something that feels good and exciting to you, then you need to stay strong, centered, and moving forward in your life. By staying focused on what you need, you turn away from automatic negative behavior patterns that get you into trouble and off track from your goals.
  3. Practice good self-care: You will love yourself more, when you take better care of your own basic needs. Treat yourself to a mani/pedi, a massage, a specialty facial with us here at Beautique. Nourish yourself properly on a daily basis through healthy activities, good nutrition, exercise, proper sleep, prayer/meditation, and healthy social interactions.
  1. Set Boundaries: When you set the proper boundaries between you, your food and your weight loss goal you’ll be able to say “no” easily without feeling limited or deprived from some of the foods you eat. It’ll help you create and maintain a healthy balanced lifestyle.
  2. Forgive yourself: We humans can be so hard on ourselves, but remember, you are not perfect, nobody is, and who says you have to be perfect? Stop being so hard on yourself! Before you can truly become a better version of YOU, please practice being less hard on yourself when you make a mistake and eat the wrong thing or miss an exercise routine. Remember, there are no failures, if you have learned and grown from your mistakes; there are only lessons learned. Fall off the saddle? Well, get yourself back on darling!

If you choose just one or two of these tips to adopt, you’ll begin to accept and love yourself. You’ll find that your weight loss journey really turns into becoming a BETTER ENERGETIC YOU. You can only love a person as much as you love yourself, and the more self-love you have for yourself, the better prepared you are for a healthy relationship with yourself.

Oh, and here’s a bonus tip. Tip #6 Humor. Laugh. Find the funny in life. As we’ve started this new decade, I’ve been researching health and beauty trends of the 1920s to see how far we’ve come along.  I’ve had so much fun learning that we really haven’t changed very much. Thankfully regulations have come into place, but I just have to share this one picture that literally made me LOL.  Aww…. if only this was possible. We know magic weight loss soap doesn’t exist, but thankfully you have Dr. Sanchez and his team of experts at Beautique Medical Spa.

The Beauty Revolution of the Roaring 20’s

One Hundred Years of Anti-Aging…a Look at the Extreme Lengths at What our Great Grandmother’s Went Through to Achieve a Younger Look, and Why You Can Thank Your Lucky Stars that We’ve Come a Long Way!

Congratulations! We’ve arrived to 2020, a new year; a BRAND-NEW DECADE! Through the decades anti-aging trends have come and gone, but our obsession with finding the Fountain of Youth has not changed. Sure, the delivery systems have gotten better for the most part, but women of today share the same desires with their sisters of yesteryear.  Let’s take a trip down memory lane to see how the quest for beautiful flawless skin has…and has not changed much over the last hundred years. I’m especially partial to this topic because you see, my great grandmother was pretty daring for her time. Not quite a flapper, she did “rebel” by being the first girl in her church to bob her hair…. the scandal!  Remember, this was 1920s Cuba…that just wasn’t done in those days.

Flappers…say the word and you immediately picture Mary from Downton Abbey in her  fringe dress and slicked bob and while the bob is probably the most iconic image of the 1920s, there are many beauty trends from the 1920s that thankfully are no longer in existence, but like I mentioned before, the quest for looking young and free still dominates the health and wellness industry today. During the “roaring 20’s” the beauty industry took off. Hems got shorter, women started to wear makeup, particularly favoring heavy kohl lined eyes and bright red lips.  In New York, Elizabeth Arden opened her signature salon and began offering “make-overs” to her clients. On the west coast, Max Factor created the first foundation for film stars, and Greta Garbo ushered in the era of sophisticated eyebrows and the need for eyebrow pencils and mascara was born.

But just because a beauty trend is popular doesn’t mean it’s safe. Throughout history, people have ingested harmful substances and undergone dangerous, painful procedures in the hopes of attaining perfection. A 100 years later men and women of today still share crazy schemes in the name of beauty like suctioning lips with a shot glass to get plump lips; there’s still a lot risk regarding what women (and men) will do in the name of beauty. Thankfully a lot of the harmful regimens eventually made it out of style or were outlawed due to the dangerous substances people were ingesting and applying to their bodies.

We are going to learn about four crazy Treatments and Services that were popular in the 1920s all in the name of achieving beauty and beating the aging game.

X-Ray Beauty Treatments:

Known in the 1920’s as today’s version of laser hair removal. Back in the day, when x-rays were initially invented, beauticians would use x-ray as a tool to burn off hair! It became a popular hair removing technique until doctors began to notice that their patients were coming back severely sick. Thank goodness Theodore Harold invented the first ever laser in 1960 forty years later! However, it wasn’t until the late 1990’s that laser hair removal became FDA approved for commercial use.

Since then Laser Hair Reduction has become one of the most effective ways to remove unwanted hair from your body completely! Thank goodness! At Beautique Medical Spa each one of our team members has gotten Laser Hair Reduction, in fact, that is one of the first three services we offered. The other two were Botox and Dermal Fillers. Today, advancements in technology have made laser hair removal more affordable and accessible than ever—and it’s not just women. We have many men who are also seeking laser hair removal treatments, especially for larger areas like the back, chest, and shoulders. Another popular area for men is the ears! As improved lasers make the treatment available to people with various skin tones and hair types, living with unwanted hair is becoming a thing of the past…. like the 1920s.

Radiation-Based Beauty Products:

In the 20th century radiation-based beauty products were extremely popular and a “must have” for any woman trying to turn back the hands of time. Radium was more than a medical cure-all, during its craze, Radium was considered the “cure for the living dead” and also referred to as “perpetual sunshine” because of the glowing effect it causes. In the 1920s the added radium to anything somehow made it better. Medically, radium was usually injected or taken in pills. It was used to treat a wide range of ailments including hair loss, impotence, and even high blood pressure to name a few. In 1920 it soon became the rage and was added into a lot of household products, including a few cosmetic lines. At the time, a number of companies put radioactive materials into cosmetics. Of course, women who used these radium products (which were in almost everything from toothpaste to face lotion) saw a slew of terrible health complications years later.

As we have emerged into a whole new century and many decades later cosmetic lines and skincare lines have taken on a cleaner approach eliminating harsh chemicals that can cause damage to your health. The role of science in the beauty industry has increased, and even today, when so many are demanding more ‘natural’ products we still look to science to ensure their purity and safety. Which is why we offer a scientific and natural approach at our spa. In fact, we are so obsessed with safe anti-aging solutions, our skin care lines are as natural as possible while still being effective. Because they are medical grade lines, all products are made in small batches free from preservatives that allow the products to be on the store shelves for years.  Our Nelly Du Vuyst Bio Line is GMP Certified and holds the Cosmos award which is the highest award for clean organic ingredients available in the cosmetic industry and is recognized by over 150 countries worldwide!

Heavy Eyeliner Made a Statement

You might think that eyeliner was always part of a classic beauty routine, but until the 1920s, the average American woman had never even heard of it. Thanks to the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt, eyeliner’s popularity didn’t really skyrocket until the year 1922. This event introduced the western world to Egyptian eyeliner styles, which quickly caught on in the United States. The 1920’s were a time of experimentation for women, and they applied their eyeliner with a sense of drama which is why heavy black eyeliner styles were huge at the time. Maybelline, Revlon and Max Factor had picked up on the trend quickly creating their own kohl eyeshadows that women would use as eyeliner. However, DIY was always a thing and some women would use petroleum jelly and soot to create their heavy eyeliner look as well.

As the eyeliner has reinvented itself throughout the decades from thin black eyeliner, to blue smudgy thanks to the age of YouTube tutorials and Instagram makeup, the signature eyeliner style of our current decade has to be a graphic, precise cat eye. Liquid or gel eyeliner is usually used to execute this look. Our personal favorite is Jane Iredale’s Liquid Eyeliner. It’s highly pigmented, latex-free and even essential oils to help nourish your lash line. But if you want to boast the original smoky eye, Iredale’s black eye pencil goes on so smoothly and softly that it will not tug at your eyes which is naturally such a sensitive area.

Washing Away Fat with Soap:

Okay, this fad was probably one of my favorites.  I couldn’t start laughing, and wishing it was true. During this time women decided it was time to liberate themselves from the awful and oftentimes dangerous corset. As dress styles changed women became obsessed with their weight in the 1920’s, we relate today because much hasn’t changed, and a ton of wacky beauty products made their way into the mainstream. From medicated undergarments, fat reducing creams, slim figure baths to the ever popular “fat soap”. There were different brands of body washes taking over pharmacy shelves that promised to literally “wash away” your fat like dirt! The La Parle Obesity Soap was a coconut-oil soap tinged with potassium iodide and sassafras that claimed to melt away fat while shrinking skin so that there would be no excess skin after the weight was lost.

Of course, most products have been reinvented. We can still find cellulite reducing creams, waist trainers to increase sweating and cinching our midsection as we work out and the occasional body wraps to help reduce fat. Are they effective? Possibly, but the question is: are they permanent and that is a hard “no.”

While technology has advanced and we have seen a lot of services on the market promising to freeze and destroy fat such as CoolSculpting and Venus Freeze, many of them have come and gone.  We are a little more cautious before jumping on any trend bandwagon. One of the best services we have found to permanently eliminate fat is the UltraSlim. UltraSlim is the only non-invasive procedure for permanent, immediate fat loss without dieting, exercise, drugs, or surgery. The UltraSlim device uses a special LED Red light to stimulate and shrink fat cells. The treated fat cells respond by opening temporary pores in the cell and emptying the fat cell contents, releasing all of that stubborn fat you just can’t seem to get rid of, without dieting or exercise. Most importantly you are not destroying the actual cell like CoolSculpting and Liposuction can. By keeping the integrity of your cell in tack you reduce the risk of getting lumps and bumps in the areas that were treated…you’ll just reduce inches…and that’s something we all want.

The 1920’s were a thoroughly modern time which introduced so many innovative services and products in the anti-aging industry. We can be forever grateful to the women who paved the way for our lifestyle today. Like I mentioned, while trends have come and gone, our desire to look and feel beautiful, to radiate confidence has not changed since the beginning of time.  We belong to a sisterhood of power, innovation, and gumption. This year think of this decade as a sort of Do Over. Let’s make the Flappers of the Roaring 20s proud. We at Beautique Medical Spa are honored to serve as your guide on your quest to achieving your health and beauty goals. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your journey.  Here’s to the next 100 years. I can’t wait to see what lies ahead. In the meantime, I want to thank my Gamama (that’s what we called my great grandmother) for setting us up to be strong and confident women.
