How Often are Botox Treatments REALLY Needed?

how often is botox needed blog cover

It’s no secret. We LOVE Botox, and as leaders in this service for the past 20 years, we get a LOT of questions regarding this #1 wrinkle – relaxer.

The most common questions we hear are:

  • Why should I get Botox? Aren’t I too young?
  • How often is Botox needed?
  • What happens if I stop? Will I get more wrinkles?

To help clear things up, we asked our Founder and Medical Director, Dr. Manuel J. Sanchez, to answer these questions. Of course, you will need to consult a professional for the amount ofBotox units you will need, price, and pre-and post-treatment instructions.

At what age should I get Botox?

Most people start thinking about getting Botox in their late 30s or early 40s. While Botox can be administered at any age, it is most effective when clients start in their 20s or early 30s. There are several reasons for this, but the main reason is expressiveness. Botox targets the facial muscles and helps make them relax providing a smoother, relaxed look, and when administered properly, you’ll still have your facial expressions. We recommend to get  your first treatments as soon as lines and wrinkles start to bother you…that’s a good time to start your Botox journey. When you should get your first Botox treatment is a personal decision, just keep in mind that the longer you wait to start getting treatments, your facial muscles are “exercising” which can cause wrinkles only visible during movement (dynamic wrinkles) to become present even when not making any facial expressions (static wrinkles)…those wrinkles usually require more units and can take a little longer to relax.

How often is Botox needed and why?

One of the most asked questions we get is:  “How often is Botox needed?”  Ideally, you should get Botox treatment every 3 to 4 months. Most people get it every 3 months. while some can get away with treatments every 3 ½ or 4 months, but those people are either younger or aren’t genetically predisposed to creating static wrinkles. After 3 months, your body has metabolized the Botox that was injected to relax the facial muscles and you’ll start to notice movement in those areas.

You might hear of people waiting 5 months or longer between treatments. This typically means they are waiting for the wrinkles to return before getting another treatment. This is not the best method of treating wrinkles. Facial muscles can gain strength so it will take more Botox to treat the wrinkles, which will end up costing you more as well.
When a person is consistent about getting Botox every 3 months, they prevent the facial muscles from “exercising” and becoming more prominent. Again, as mentioned before, if administered correctly, you will still have facial expressions and movement. In other words, you’ll still be you, just without the lines and wrinkles when your face is at rest. Plus, the number of units required at each treatment typically remains the same with regular treatments. Research shows that people who are consistent with their treatments will often use fewer units per session than when they started.

What happens if I stop getting Botox?

If you stop getting Botox treatments, the treated wrinkles will return. “If you get Botox and stop your wrinkles will get worse,” that’s a common myth, don’t believe it.  It may appear that way because your face has looked so good while getting Botox, you forget what you looked like before…this is why we take before pictures.
Botox is a lot like diet and exercise. You eat right and workout to lose weight. But, if you stop, you’ll most likely regain the weight. Botox gets rid of the wrinkles. Stop and they will come back. Consistency is the key to your success.
If you decide to get Botox, do your research and find a practitioner you feel comfortable with. Get referrals from trusted friends. Make sure you talk to the injectors and the rest of the staff. Ask them if they get Botox and how long they have been getting treatments. Most importantly, don’t shop around on price. You are worth so much more than a Groupon.
