Summer Lovin’ Without the Razors: The Freedom of Laser Hair Removal

Are you tired of battling with those pesky little hairs that seem to pop up in the most inconvenient places? Well, join the club! Virtually everyone has suffered from unwanted hair at some point in their lives. We’ve all tweezed, shaved, waxed, and even resorted to the electrifying wonders of electrolysis. But fear not, my fellow hairy comrades, for we bring you tidings of a hairless utopia!

Laser Hair Removal is exactly what you may be looking for this summer. To begin with, it was first developed in the 1960’s, but was not really effective until the 1990’s when it was approved by the FDA. Presently, millions of people are using laser hair removal to attain smooth, silky skin safely and effectively.

So let’s dive into this magical process that will leave you saying “goodbye” to unwanted hair, and “hello” to confidence!

Untangling the Magic of Laser Hair Removal: How it Works

This innovative procedure harnesses the power of an intense pulsating beam of light to target individual hair follicles. The process begins with the application of a cooling gel on the targeted area, which helps protect the outer layers of skin and enhance comfort during treatment.

When the gel has been applied, a handheld device emitting the pulsating beam is carefully maneuvered over the skin. As this intense light passes through the surface, it seeks out and heats up melanin -the pigment responsible for giving color to our hair- within each follicle. The heat generated by this process effectively damages or destroys these individual hairs at their roots, inhibiting future growth.

It’s important to understand that hair follicles transition through active and dormant stages. Only active follicles can be treated. Dormant follicles cannot absorb the laser light, so they remain undamaged. Only 30-50% of hair is actively growing at any given time. Certainly multiple sessions are required for every single follicle to be treated.

Candidates for Laser Hair Removal

Although laser hair removal can be performed on virtually any skin color and hair type, hair color is the most important factor. The light emitted from the laser is attracted to the melanin, or dark pigment, in the hair follicle. So that means that it works best on darker hair. With this in mind, treatments performed on red, blonde, and gray hair are not generally as effective.

To clarify, laser hair removal doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. Some hair may be resistant to treatment or may grow again after treatment. However, new hair growth tends to be finer and lighter in color. Keep in mind everyone is different and results can vary when it comes to hair growing back.

Areas You Can Treat

First stop on our hair-free adventure: the legs! Ladies, we all know the struggle of constantly shaving and waxing those never-ending leg hairs. Well, fret no more! Laser hair removal is here to save the day and give you legs smoother than a baby’s bottom.

Other common treatment areas include underarms, upper lip, chin, and bikini line for women and chest, back, and neck for men. Nearly any area of the body with unwanted hair can be treated.

What to Expect When Starting on Your Hair-Free Journey

Each treatment removes a progressive percentage of hair until the skin becomes smooth and hair free. Typically 8 to 12 treatments, every 4 to 12 weeks are needed to accomplish permanent results.

Several “touch-up” treatments may be needed if new hair growth occurs after the treatments are complete.

Treatment time depends on the treated area’s size and the number of areas being treated during one session. Typically individual areas can be treated in 30 minutes or less. There is no downtime, so treatments can be performed during a lunch break.

There is some pain involved, but most people tolerate it very well. It has been compared to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Of course, our technicians want to keep you comfortable. To alleviate some of the discomfort, a topical numbing cream or ice can be applied.

Understanding Risks and Side Effects

The most common side effects of laser hair removal include:

  • Skin Irritation—temporary redness and slight swelling are common. More swelling occurs in areas with denser, coarser hair growth.
  • Pigment Changes—laser hair removal may darken or lighten the affected skin, usually temporarily. Skin lightening primarily affects those who have darker skin.
  • Allergic Reactions—in very rare cases, an allergic reaction to the heat can occur. Skin may appear red and blotchy and become very itchy. The reaction is temporary and can be treated with topical anti-itch creams and anti-inflammatory medication. Treatments can continue; however, the reaction should decrease as the hair growth is reduced.

If you have very sensitive skin and are concerned about side effects, no worries. Our laser technician can treat a small patch area to test this out. Any reaction will occur within one to three days after the test.

There are certain medical conditions, such as pregnancy, that could affect your treatments. Most importantly, notify your physician or technician of any pre-existing medical conditions or if your condition changes while you are undergoing treatments. It may be necessary to put your treatments on hold until it is safe to continue.

Thanks for helping me understand how laser hair removal makes it easier to improve your skin’s appearance by removing signs of unwanted hair from your body. My friend is interested in transforming her look this year. I will talk to her about finding a medical spa that can help out in the future.
