Sweat-proof Your Makeup Routine

Some situations call for long-lasting, melt-proof makeup, and summer is one of those times. We love spending time outside, but enduring the heat and protecting against sweat and shine is essential. Whether exploring nature on hikes, enjoying time with friends at barbecues or and even taking our fitness routine outdoors, we have a few tricks for giving our makeup staying power. With these sweat-proof makeup tips, your makeup routine will be ready for the season.

Keep it Simple

When it comes to exercise, there are two types of people. Those who go makeup-free and those who don’t. Sure, there are perks to working out with a clean face, but if you’re like us, and want a little extra oomph when getting fit, the key is to keep your makeup simple. Our favorite sweat-proof makeup look starts with a great moisturizer and only uses three products.

  • Retractable Brow Pencil: The easiest way to look finished in seconds is you define your brows. Our Jane Iredale brow pencils come in three, water resistant colors and the fine pencil tip allows you to create a naturally full brow look.
  • Liquid Eye Shadow: We love using Jane Iredale’s Eye Shere on a daily basis because they have serious staying power, and that’s why it’s the perfect water resistant formula to wear if you know you’re going to sweat. Try the shade Champagne Silk for the perfect no-makeup makeup look.
  • Lip Gloss: Our favorite way to glam up our melt-proof makeup look is to add a hint of shine with Jane Iredale’s PureGloss Lip Gloss. It’s moisturizing and gives the perfect sheer color for a simple yet stunning finish.

Use a Primer for Oily Skin

When out and about on a hot day, sometimes our face starts to look a little shiny. To make sure we stay selfie-ready throughout all our summer activities, we like to apply an oil-reducing primer like Jane Iredale’s Absence or Smooth Affair for Oily Skin. Global Makeup Educator Edgar Dominguez also recommends using Tinted Moisturizer, topped with a matte powder for the ultimate sweat-proof resistance.”

Stay Clear of Creamy Eyeliners

We’ve all had the experience of eyeliner melting into your eyes, so to avoid this, Global Makeup Educator Hannah Hatcher says steer clear of creamy products: “Anything with a creamy base will want to move as your body heats up.  So, stick with liners that have a powder finish and liquid liners.”

Set Your Makeup

As always, set your makeup with Hydration Spray to lock the minerals in place. Our favorite two Hydration Sprays for the summer months are Jane Iredale’s Balance Hydration Spray, which helps balance oil in your skin, and Jane Iredale’s POMMISST Hydration Spray because it contains Pomegranate Extract, a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free radical production caused by sun exposure.

Pat Don’t Rub

When you want to touch-up your makeup after you work out, or even after you go swimming, Product Trainer and Pro Artist Coordinator Christine Orcutt Savolis says, “Blot any sweat gently with a towel (DO NOT RUB).” Then, spritz Hydration Spray to refresh your skin, let it dry and retouch as needed.

Physical vs. Chemical Sunscreen: What’s The Difference

Choosing a sunscreen can be overwhelming. There are so many factors to consider (SPF, formulation, application, etc.) that it’s easy to give up and just pick the first one you see. One of the most confusing elements of the process is deciding whether to buy a physical sunscreen or a chemical one.

If you’re uncertain whether you want to transition from a chemical sunscreen to a physical one, here are some points of difference to help you choose which type of sunscreen is best for you.

  What is Physical Sunscreen

  • Contains physical sun blockers; active mineral ingredients zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.
  • Provides chemical-free broad spectrum coverage (protects against both UVA and UVB rays).
  • Remains on the surface of your skin.
  • Acts like tiny mirrors reflecting, refracting and absorbing rays.
  • Begins working as soon as you apply.
  • Less likely to cause irritation on your skin.
  • Is available in a range of SPF levels and can be very water-resistant.

What is Chemical Sunscreen

  • Contains organic (carbon-based) chemical compounds.
  • Provides broad spectrum coverage by combining multiple ingredients; zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide are also used in some formulas.
  • Works by penetrating your skin’s surface.
  • Absorbs the sun’s rays into the ingredients like a sponge.
  • Requires approximately 20 minutes to fully sink into your skin.
  • Increased likelihood of skin irritation due to the combination of ingredients.
  • Is available in a range of SPF levels and can be very water-resistant.

Are you ready to try a chemical-free sunscreen? Look no further because we offer multiple sunscreens that have earned The Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Approval. Stop by Beautique today and pick one up today!

How to Tell if You Have Dry or Dehydrated Skin

Do you know how to tell if your skin is Dry or Dehydrated?  Many people don’t know how to tell the difference and as a result end up using the wrong product or getting services that may actually do more harm than good.

Fact: Many skin problems are consequences of the wrong choice of skin care products with relation to the misdiagnosis of the skin condition…

Tightness, discomfort and itching … The symptoms of dry and dehydrated skin can be very similar. Thus, many people having dehydrated skin believe they have dry skin and will opt for greasier products thinking their symptoms will be relieved … But often, the skin problems will worsen and new symptoms may appear.

How to determine if you have dry or dehydrated skin? Take the test right now!

If you notice that at a certain time of the day you are getting a shine on the nose, forehead or chin: you have a dehydrated skin!

DEHYDRATED SKIN

Dehydrated skin lacks water but is still able to produce sebum. Dehydrated skin has a lack of molecules that capture and hold water on the skin surface and inside the skin cells. Seeing that the skin should protect us, it automatically compensates for this lack of molecules holding water by producing more sebum. It is for this reason that dehydrated skin can feel and show symptoms of dry skin (tightness, discomfort etc.) as well as the symptoms of oily skin (shiny areas, pustules, blackheads etc.). The appearance of large pores and accumulated dead cells can be seen on certain areas.

WHAT TO DO? The goal is not to add more oil, but instead, compensate for this lack of molecules holding water. Dehydrated skin needs to restore this water level from the deep and superficial layers of the skin and from within the cells.

WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD BE USED? You want to choose products that contain hyaluronic acid. Some of our favorite products are Nelly Du Vuyst® Hydrocell Plus Cream is composed of hyaluronic acid and Fucogel; two hydrocaptors that retain and prevent water evaporation. The Matrixyl Synthe’6 found in the Nelly DuVuyst® Hydrocell Plus Cream stimulates, up to 174%, the natural production of hyaluronic acid to gently restore the water reserves in the dermis. The Matrixyl Synthe’6 also promotes a good circulation of water from the deeper layers to the superficial layers of the skin.

Tip: Do not forget to drink water! Without water, you will never restore the hydration of your skin!

DRY SKIN

Dry skin, also referred to as “alipidic skin” is a skin that is missing oily compounds (lipids). The sebaceous glands of dry skin do not produce enough sebum. The water is no longer retained and evaporates, hence, causing a dryness of the skin.

Due to the fact that the follicles are not dilated, the pores appear visually smaller. The skin appears rough and dull looking. This lack of glow is caused by opaque dead cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin that do not reflect light. Due to this dehydration, the appearance of wrinkles on the skin are intensified.

WHAT TO DO? Exfoliate! The goal is to eliminate the dead cells that accumulated on the surface with products and services. We love Nelly De Vuyst® 3 Minute Gommage and our DNA HyroLipid Scrub. After exfoliation it is necessary to compensate for this lack of sebum by applying oily compounds (lipid) that will restore the skin’s protective barrier and maintain the proper skin hydration using water captor compounds.

WHAT PRODUCTS SHOULD BE USED? You want products that are rich in lipids and fatty acids such as Nelly Du Vuyst® Dry Skin Cream Containing Natural Moisturizing Factors this product helps rebuild the protective lipidic barrier of the skin preventing water evaporation. It restructures the lipid cement between cells and restores the water reserves in the skin. The skin appears softer, smoother and generally more comfortable. The wrinkles caused dehydration disappear. Take it One Step further by adding Nelly Du Vuyst® Cellular Matrix Oil for greater lipidic richness and for extra comfort.

Ideal services we recommend are Microdermabrasion, Silk Peels, and our Age Defying Facial that combines mechanical and physical exfoliation to help prepare your skin for these products.  By taking care of your skin at home you will be able to enjoy a balanced skin which in turn will provide you with an amazing glow.

ARE YOU CAUSING YOUR SKIN MORE HARM THAN GOOD?

Do’s & Don’t of Exfoliation.  Let’s Find out the Facts.

The other day, while on vacation, I decided to treat myself to a facial at a high end resort.  I was actually feeling a little smug because I knew that my skin would be better than most since I own a medical spa. Well, before I keep tooting my own horn, I need to make a confession. Prior to my vacation, I was so busy getting ready to “Relax” that I neglected my skin care routine at home.  I was basically just washing my face and falling into bed at night. I stopped exfoliating, and really caring for my skin.

Fast forward to my relaxing Facial treat and I was appalled as the esthetician told me I needed to exfoliate and that I had a bunch of blackheads on my nose! Let me just tell you, that brought my “relaxation” to a screeching halt! It made me think, are we making sure that our clients know the importance of exfoliation?

What exactly is EXFOLIATION?

EXFOLIATION helps remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, keeping it fresh and healthy looking. Radiant skin requires exfoliation. The body naturally exfoliates through the process of desquamation or cell turn over. A new skin cell is born in the deepest layer of the epidermis and during its lifespan, migrates to the upper most layer of the skin. By the time it arrives at the top, the skin cell is basically dead and when the younger, perkier cells come up from below, the older cells are given the boot. The entire cycle, from birth to slough, takes about 28 days, depending on your age.

This brings another important factor. The rate of cell turn over slows as we age. This is a factor causing our skin to look flaky and dull.  Dead skin cells that tend to linger are trouble makers that cause pigmentation, inconsistencies, dull completion, block and irritated pores that can become unsightly blemishes, It is especially a problem for acne skin. Acne and oily skin are already dealing with a skin turnover process that is a little slower than ideal, disproportional shedding; meaning the skin has even more dead skin cells to fend off.

To regain the same shine and youthful appearance, exfoliation is a mandatory regime. If it is done on regular basis, it will improve the skin renewal process and minimize the bad effects of sun rays, dirt and dead cells on the skin.

3 TYPES OF EXFOLIATION

  • MANUAL EXFOLIATION– This method depends on scrubbing and rubbing to remove dead skin cells. Scrubbing granules can cause irritation, redness or slight wounds on the face.
  • Ingredients such as, crushed irregular shaped oyster shells, seeds, apricot pits, or any inexpensive or exotic “natural” or “unnatural” material suiting a product line. In extreme over use with abrasive scrubs the jagged granules can cause microscopic lacerations on the surface, sometimes leading to a tough feel as your body forms microscopic calluses against the constant abrasion. Manual exfoliators are not for severe acne, fragile skin, broken capillaries called telangiectasis (tel-an-gi-ec-ta-sis), or any skin type and condition that can’t tolerate pressure or friction.
  • CHEMICAL- This type of exfoliation loosens  the bonds that hold dead skin cells on the skins surface with AHA, Retinoids. There are many types that vary from progressive to deep working within the epidermis, these chemical peels fall within the aesthetic range.  Proper protocol and guidelines are required. An professional understanding of each skin type and knowledge of the potential of each ingredient is a must.  Therefore, it is crucial to follow your skin care professional’s advice. ONLY allow an experienced professional to perform chemical peels in a trusted environment.
  • ENZYMES are proteins that are vegetable, fruit, dairy or plant-derived to digest dead cells, giving skin a smoother, more polished appearance. Think of them like little “Pacmans” chomping up dead skin. Enzymes are designed to be used weekly as part of your at home care routine. They provide a light exfoliation and good maintenance between professional visits.

So now that you know exactly what Exfoliation is, and the top 3 ways to properly and gently exfoliate your skin you can show off beautiful skin.

I am happy to report that after the esthetican performed extractions, I was able to relax for the remainder of the facial. And, like a child reprimanded by a teacher, I have made sure to be extra vigiliant about using my enzymes at home for weekly exfoliation and then work with my regular esthetician to schedule chemical peels as needed, and other services to make sure that I keep breakouts at a minimum and will only receive rave compliments whenever I go back to a resort for a facial.

Fall 2012 Makeup From Jane Iredale

The heat wave of 2012 seems to be continuing past Labor Day this year, but that doesn’t change the fact that fall is right around the corner! Take a look in any magazine or store front and you will be inspired by bright colors, cozy sweaters and the super cute ankle boots! With new fall fashion comes new fall makeup. This year Jane Iredale has introduced a collection that is Simply Magical. Mulled wine on the lips and smoky eyes, makes you just want to curl up with a cup of cocoa or head out for a night on the town with your best buds.

I have been wearing this collection every day since I got it, this is not an exaggeration. Usually I wear my newest favorite makeup for a few days and then decide to change it up; not this collection! The thing I love most about it, is that while the colors seem “cool” they are actually quite warm. Had you told me prior to trying Sundown that it was a “warm” gray eye shadow, I wouldn’t have believed you, but it is! It contains a deep charcoal, a rich purple-gray and a shimmery beige color. Why is this so spectacular you ask, well I’m going to tell you. For those of you who have always loved the look of a true gray smoky eye, but could never pull off the cool gray and silver color palette, you’re going to love Sundown. For those of you who love cool colors, like me, it works great for us too! Here is my go to look for fall:

Apply the lightest shade of Sundown Eye Shadow Triple to your entire eye lid up to your brow bone using the Deluxe Shader Brush.

Apply the middle shade of Sundown to your crease using the Crease Brush. I like to set the brush right in my Crease and move it back and forth from about ¾ of the way in to the outer edge of my eyelid.

Using the Eye Shader Brush, apply the darkest shade of Sundown to the outer corner of your eye lid. Here are the best steps to finding where to apply the outer corner color:

Find the point on your eyelid that lines up with the outer edge of your pupil. This is your starting point.

Pat the color from this starting point moving up diagonally until you meet your crease shadow.

Now fill in this outer area.

Blend well.

Next, line your top lash line with Smoky Quartz Mystikol.

Line the outer half of your bottom lash line with Smoky Quartz Mystikol, be sure not to line further in than your pupil.

Using the Smudge Brush, smudge your top line.

Smudge your bottom line and extend the smudge so that the outer ¾ of your bottom lash line is now covered.

Apply PureLash Extender & Conditioner followed by PureLash Mascara in Jet Black.

Highlight your brow bone using the highlighter end of the Smoky Quartz Mystikol.

Apply Barely Rose PurePressed Blush to the apples of your cheeks using the Dome Brush.

Finish with Venice Just Kissed Lip Plumper.
